too hot to handle as United beat lowly Amlwch..............
A trip to bottom placed Amlwch just before going to Bethesda
who score goals for fun was just the tonic for Aled Owen's
men, with a quick glance at the league statistics it was
a fine chance to score some goals and gain some confidence
before next Wednesday's trip to Meurig Park for the third
round Barritt Cup encounter, with Amlwch having played
20, lost 20, conceded 113 and only scored 12!
Once
again Gavin Edwards was a no-show, text messages unanswered
and mobile phone turned off his absence meant that Marvin
Pritchard was brought in for only his second start of
the season. The final score 1-5, had that been the score
at half time I would have been disappointed, it should
have been 0-5! Amlwch didn't have a decent shot on target
throughout the first 45 minutes and United should have
killed things off once again. But, all said I think that
the final score was a bit flattering for United, as Amlwch
returned for the second half having had some Red Bull
and were a totally different proposition.
The
first ten minutes and United were two nil up thanks to
strikes by Mathew Phillips, his first came after seven
minutes when brother Gethin's long throw found him in
space and his good finishing got United off the mark even
though Mathew did have two or three chances before then
to take the lead, the first of which was in the first
minute when Dan Pyrs released him into the area but he
fluffed the final ball! Mathew's second came in the 9th
minute when Carl Wayne won the ball in the centre and
released Mathew who beat the offside trap and coolly rounded
the keeper to tap home, 0-2 and things were looking good
for United.
The
reminder of the half saw United miss chance after chance,
the final ball being the major factor which left Mathew,
Gareth Eifion and Dan frustrated and the whistle happy
Mr Arwel Jones did nothing to keep the flow of the game
going, I'm sure when he farts in his sleep they sound
of a whistle, but one thing's for sure, if his farts are
anything like his performances on the field they sure
as hell stink! Carl Griffiths delivered fine balls into
the six yard area from two identical free kicks just outside
the area on the left side, but there was no-one there
to take advantage. The very last action of the half saw
Gareth Eifion free on goal with only the keeper to beat
but he failed to get height on the ball and the keeper
stopped the effort with his left foot, and to add insult
to injury his father claimed that even he would have scored
that one!
The
second half started with Amlwch on full throttle and they
piled pressure on the United defence with Luke Hughes
being called into action and pulled off a fine save within
a minute of the resumption. Within five minutes Amlwch
had three corners the third of which saw a header strike
the bar, they were awarded a free-kick within their own
half and when the ball bounced in front of Luke we all
thought the worse, but this time he caught it! Two minutes
later and United were saved once again by Luke when he
made a double save, and all the pressure were getting
to the defence which saw Chris Joyce commit the ultimate
sin, an attempted back pass, but this time from a bit
of distance and Luke managed to clear just about in time,
when will he learn?!
Before
Mathew claimed his hat trick in the 65th minute Amlwch
had about three or four efforts go over the bar, and if
their finishing had been better then United would have
been struggling, but thankfully the storm was weathered
and Mathew settled the nerves when he collected from a
Marvin Pritchard over the top ball and advanced into the
area and coolly slotted the ball passed the keeper's right.
Within three minutes Amlwch struck the bar once again
from 18 yards, and were rewarded with a consolation goal
on 70 minutes when Eifion Williams gave away a free-kick
some 35 yards out on the right side, the strike eluded
everyone and struck the back of the net on the far post,
a poor goal to concede but it was the wakeup call the
United players wanted and the pressure was once again
applied by United.
Prior
to Amlwch's number 5 being sent off after 78 minutes for
two bookable offences, both Mathew and Carl Griffiths
had chances to extend United's lead and the resulting
free kick from the sending off saw Marvin deliver a fine
cross from the left just outside the penalty area which
saw Gethin Phillip's header cleared off the line. A further
two minutes and Amlwch's keeper pulled off a fine save
to deny Mathew his fourth when he blasted from 8 yards.
An 82nd minute corner met by the head of Dan Pyrs was
then met by an Amlwch hand and straight into the goal.
Dan didn't waste any time in claiming the goal, but one
for the dubious goals panel maybe, an own goal in my book
but one thing was for sure, the game was well and truly
over as far as Amlwch were concerned.
With
only four minutes remaining Chris Joyce played a blinder,
he collected the ball on the by-line by the half way line
and advanced passed a couple of Amlwch defenders and delivered
an EXCELLENT INCH PERFECT cross from just outside the
area, and Carl Griffiths made no mistake from within the
six yard box. Martin Bohana had replaced Marvin in the
85th minute and had two chances at goal before the final
whistle, and in injury time Mathew hit the bar and Gavin
Rogerson was a foot or so wide and high from making it
six.
United
made this encounter difficult for themselves, and should
have killed Amlwch off well within the first half, but
a pleasing result nonetheless. Next up a very tough trip
to Bethesda, and all eleven will have to be their guard
if there's going to be a slightest chance of progressing
in the Barritt Cup by beating a much in form Bethesda
side, especially when you consider the roasting they gave
United at Eithin Duon earlier in the season.
