BARMOUTH
SEE RED AS UNITED ROMP HOME
..
Denbigh based referee Peter Barrow dismissed three Barmouth
players and both the teams' managers in another game that
should have been dead and buried in the first 45 minutes.
All the sending offs came after Llanrug had taken a three
one lead, and all kicked off as Barmouth were stunned
a minute after Dan Pyrs not only got a shot on target
but scored (Barmouth weren't the only ones amazed if I'm
honest!!).
The
first half was once again all United, much the same as
in previous games and most certainly the same as in Barmouth
a few weeks earlier, when the support hoped that United
would not be left rueing the missed chances. Within seconds
of kick-off Mathew Phillips broke down the left flank
and delivered a good cross into the six yard box but was
cleared by the Barmouth defence before Gareth Eifion could
pounce. The first real chance fell to David Noel Williams
after seven minutes when United were awarded a free-kick
some 25 yards out for a foul on Dan Pyrs, but the resulting
strike was easily picked up by the visiting keeper.
United
had a further couple of chances to take the lead through
efforts by Mathew Phillips and Carl Griffiths, but a piece
of brilliance by David Noel Williams in the 20th minute,
broke the deadlock. Charlie collect a Gethin Phillips
throw-in some 25 yards out on the left side and went through
the Barmouth defence quicker than when CJ picked-up his
pants in the Penbont, like a hot knife though butter he
carved his way through a number of defenders with ease
and got to the six yard mark at the by-line and seeing
Gareth Eifion on the near post delivered a perfect cross
for a tap-in, but Gareth took his eye off the ball and
brushed over, however the ball fell nicely to Carl Griffiths
who made no mistake from six yards out when his low strike
across the goal found the spot Gareth Eifion had in his
sights on moments earlier.
Dan
Pyrs had a chance to double the advantage two minutes
later but with only the keeper to beat he got flustered
and wasted the chance, but Gavin Edwards in similar circumstances
got things right after 27 minutes when he was released
by Mathew Phillips into the area on the left side and
he coolly lobbed the advancing keeper from around 15 yards
out. Seconds later Eifion Williams delivered a fine long
ball up field and whilst Mathew Phillips managed a touch,
he was too close to the keeper to take advantage.
The
first half finished at two nil, but not before Gareth
Eifion struck the post after 33 minutes when Mathew Phillips
beat the off-side trap and got a fine cross to Gareth's
feet. Just before the interval Dan Pyrs and David Noel
linked up well to set up Gareth Eifion, but his final
ball lacked venom and direction and resulted in an easy
stop at head height for the keeper. The miss of the match
came in the final minute of the half when David Noel missed
a sitter with only the keeper to beat he struck wide from
six yards out. The referee said at half time the "Charlie
will have to talk us through that miss later!" Again
it should have been five or six for United, and I think
Luke had only one save to make during the half.
The
opening minutes of the second half resulted in an all
too familiar occurrence, having failed to capitalise on
the chances during the first 45 minutes, United were immediately
under pressure. Within a minute Barmouth blasted over
the bar from 18 yards out, they had a corner on 50 minutes
which Luke shouted for a claim but once again vastly misjudged,
and within a further minute Barmouth had pulled one back
when Craig Papyrnyk made no mistake from 6 yards, beating
Luke at his near post with a blast which Luke could only
manage to slightly deflect with his boot.
Ex-Llanrug
midfielder Chris Griffith forced a fine save off Luke
just after the hour mark when his 30 yard free-kick rounded
the United wall which Luke palmed for a corner, from which
he pulled off another fine save with a strike from just
inside the area. United then started to settle once again
and Gavin Edwards and Carl Griffiths advanced nicely up
field with a well worked one-two but the final ball was
misread and lead to nothing. The next minute saw Gethin
release the ball to Gavin and in turn to Carl who delivered
a fine cross into the area, but Mathew fired high and
wide. Within a couple of minutes Gareth Eifion was booked
for a challenge on the keeper, the ball was there to be
won, but as so often happens the referee was overprotective
of the keeper and thought better of it!
After
73 minutes Barmouth struck the post with an effort from
around 30 yards, but what happened five minutes later
was truly amazing, and one of those 'you had to be there
to believe it moments', not the fact that Dan Pyrs scored,
but that got the shot on target! All jokes aside, he won
the ball some 35 yards out and advanced into the area
virtually unchallenged, he stayed calm and made no mistakes
when he coolly blasted over the keeper into the top right
corner.
A
79th minute hard tackle by Gareth Eifion in the centre
circle resulted in vasts protests by the Barmouth players,
wanting him booked and sent off, but the referee was having
none of it and eventually was forced to send off two Barmouth
players for dissent and using foul and abusive language.
The play was held up for a few minutes as the players
concerned refused to go to the dressing room and Gareth
Eifion was replaced by Martin Bohana to avoid any repercussions.
Barmouth's manager was not a happy bunny and he too was
ordered off by the referee before the match resumed.
With
only 6 minutes remaining, Carl Wayne Jones had the chance
to extend the lead, but his miss would rival Charlie's
earlier miss (not really but it might make Charlie feel
better!?), Carl with only the keeper to beat went across
the goal (as all the pundits insist you rarely beat the
keeper at his near post - are you reading Luke!!) but
the effort went wide.
Before
matters came to a conclusion Aled Owen was ordered off
the field for something the referee must have misheard
(!), and after the final whistle another Barmouth player
saw Red when he called the Ref something unpleasant. As
Mel Bach said, there were more bookings at Eithin Duon
on Saturday than at Thomas Cook!
Next
up, a trip to Glan Conwy on Easter Monday, a very tough
encounter especially as they beat Bethesda away by four
goals to one on Saturday, and who got the same score line
at Eithin Duon not so long ago.
