Absenteeism
and defensive errors cost hosts dearly..............
It
was a very unfamiliar starting line-up for the Eithin
Duon hosts on Saturday, with five regular starters absent
which left Aled Owen with no option to call upon inexperienced
youngsters to fill the gaps. Gareth Eifion's 21st birthday
bash in Blackpool was enough of a lure for club captain
Eifion Williams as well as Carl Griffiths and Gwyn Pritchard
Jones. Also absent once again was last seasons Welsh Alliance
League Player of the season Gavin Edwards, whom I presume
was rallying somewhere or other. But back into action
came Dan Pyrs, although he could not quite live-up to
wearing the unfamiliar No 6 shirt!!!!
First
chance fell to the host's when after 8 minutes Gethin
Phillips fine throw in found the feet of Gavin Rogerson,
but with only the keeper to beat the finishing was disappointing,
which saw Conwy's custodian clear his lines straight up-field
but a thunderous effort went some 2 yards over Luke's
bar. 14 minutes in saw Conwy awarded a free-kick some
25 yards out, and although the effort eluded United's
wall it was well taken by Luke Hughes.
The
32 minute saw some warning signs, when Carl Wayne Jones'
back pass to Luke was not dealt with properly and given
away by Luke cheaply but thankfully the resulting strike
went a foot over the bar, warning signs indeed. Llanrug
and Conwy had a further couple of chances before the interval,
the best of which fell to Alex Hickey following a fine
move by Andrew Williams up the right flank he got a fine
cross in which was met well by Alex but lacked direction
and proved to be an easy stop for Conwy's keeper. Maybe
the incident a few minutes earlier had taken it's toll
on Alex when he was shoulder-charged into the visitor's
dug-out and struck his head on the bench! HT, 0-0 a dire
first 45 minutes with nothing of worth to report.
It
didn't take long for Conwy to capitalise on the defensive
errors in the second half, Llanrug's left-back (who I
shall not name - he got enough stick in the Penbont and
Glyntwrog Saturday evening, for which he could only reply
- "at least I turned up" next time boys please
take him with you!). Anyway, a high back-pass which Luke
could only chest and to be fair could not easily control
saw Conwy's Ryan Watson standing up to the challenge and
take the lead. Before this point we all felt that we deserved
at least a point from the game, especially considering
the absenteeism, but this proved to be the straw that
broke the camel's back.
It
was once again unfortunate that the referee (same as last
week) decided to let careless challenges go unpunished,
which at on stage resulted in a bit of a punch-up, the
main target for the fouls was once again Dan Pyrs. He
was continuously chopped down and not allowed to play
and on one occasion Llanrug were awarded a free-kick,
but David Noel's effort was a couple of yards high from
around 30 yards out. Llanrug had a number of chances to
even up the score and indeed take the lead, but some fine
work by Conwy's keeper and defensive blocks denied all
of the advances the best two fell to David Noel Williams
a Gethin Phillips throw-in on 57 minutes saw 'Charlie'
keep the ball for what seemed an eternity in the area
and he eventually got his chance only for the keeper to
force wide.
Whilst
I was receiving reports from the United's Assistant Manager
from Newcastle just before 4:00pm (when Keith was just
about to retire for the evening!!) Conwy struck the bar
but they were adjudged off-side. The 68th minute saw David
Noel's other golden opportunity (I'm not sure if this
was the one "he turned on a sixpence" or the
first one on 57 minutes, but he asked me to make sure
I got it into the report!) but a defender got a foot in
to force a corner. The resulting corner saw Gethin Phillips
completely unmarked on the far post but his header lacked
venom and was easily picked-up by Conwy's keeper.
The
72nd minute proved to be the most decisive, when the aforementioned
left-back decided to try Luke with another back-pass,
but this time it lacked pace and allowed Jamie Jones time
to pounce and double the lead and effectively killed any
chance Llanrug had to salvage anything. At least this
got CJ a nomination of Man of the Match (for Conwy that
is!!)
Llanrug
were now with their heads down and Conwy sealed things
off in the 85th minute when Joe Spencer struck from around
20yards, with a grass cutter which swerved and swayed
and although Luke got a hand to the effort it wasn't enough.
The final chance of the game went Conwy's way a 30 yard
free-kick by Joe Spencer was tipped over by Luke to save
some of United's blushes at least.
Things
look like there going from bad to worse for Aled Owen's
men, and with a trip to Barmouth and Dyffryn on Saturday
followed by a return to Conwy on Wednesday night there's
no doubt things will have to improve. Let's hope there's
no more landmark birthday's in the pipeline!!
