Late
penalty dampens United's spirits
.
A
very disappointing result at Glan Conwy which was truly
a game of two halves, with the goals conceded down to
poor defending of set pieces which saw Glan Conwy's Gareth
Davies score two identical goals from corners when United
were caught napping, and he bagged a third a minute from
the interval which left United trailing by tree goals
to one at half time. United however regrouped for the
second half which saw Gareth Eifion Jones claim his hat-trick,
however a few chances went begging and the sucker punch
being delivered five minutes from time when Gethin Phillips
protected his face from close range only to be punished
with a penalty awarded against him which saw Glan's top
marksman Ashley Smith make no mistakes from the spot.
When
I arrived from my jaunt to mid Wales, the score was 1
- 1, with Gareth Eifion having just cancelled out Gareth
Davies's 14th minute header, but parity was short lived
when Davies scored an identical effort in the 41st minutes,
and then claimed his hat-trick three minutes later with
a strike from around 10 yards. Before this Glan Conwy
had a couple of efforts directed on goal with one striking
the upright through Luke Hughes' hands.
The
United players must have had a rollicking from Aled Owen
at half time, and they were by far the best team throughout
the second period. Within three minutes Gareth Eifion
claimed his second from a David Noel Williams left side
corner when he beat all of Glan Conwy's tall defenders
and headed a looping ball from the far post straight in
to the top left corner. A familiar sight this season saw
chances after chances go begging, however Gareth Eifion
got his hat-trick in the 63rd minute a fine cross from
the left by Mathew Phillips as he took the ball passed
Glan Conwy's captain with ease and delivered a perfect
ball into the six yard box for Gareth Eifion to bury home.
Again,
more chances went begging for United and Luke made a couple
of good stops, but the final nail in the coffin for United
came in the 85th minute when during a scramble in the
United box the penalty was awarded for hand ball, and
the strike by Ashley Smith more or less killed off the
game coming so late, although United did not give up hope
and tried to salvage something.
Although
I missed the first 30 minutes, I feel that a fair result
in this game of two halves should have been a 3 - 3 draw,
but that's football. A very heavy schedule ahead for United
(as has many other teams), having played Barmouth at home
on Saturday with a trip to Nefyn on Wednesday followed
by coastal drive to Halkyn on Saturday will mean 4 games
in eight days. Let's hope for some better luck in the
remaining nine fixtures.
