Report from Huwsi
Local
Derby glory for United at Maes Padarn
It
was a damp, miserable and dire day at Maes Padarn last
Saturday and the weather wasn't much better either! Black
Friday had truly taken it's toll on a number of United's
players (and coaching staff!!) this coupled with the fact
that the encounter proved to be a typical Local Derby
meant that the supporters were using match-sticks to keep
awake by half time!!
Having
not played for the previous three Saturdays due to the
adverse weather conditions, United knew it was going to
be a tough match at Maes Padarn, and adding to the challenge
was the absence of some key figures. Gareth Eifion Jones
was on crutches following a five a side mishap, Christian
Jarvis could only make the sub's bench due to a lingering
knee problem, Andrew Williams had work commitments and
Gavin Edwards' Black Friday really took its toll, as he
was a no show!
United
had the first chance to take the lead when David Noel
Williams connected well with a 35 yard free-kick; however
it was directed directly at the Peris custodian. Next
chance fell to Mathew Phillips; however he could only
find the side netting from around six yards out.
Llanberis
first real chance came after 20 minutes, when Terry Saynor
struck a fine free kick from around 25 yards on the right
side, but the goal-bound effort was deflected for a corner.
Guto Llewelyn forced a fine save form United keeper Luke
Hughes after 33 minutes, when he connected well from 12
yards out which Luke tipped over the bar. Five minutes
later, Llanberis' right-back Tomos Owen found himself
one-on-one with Luke, however his chipped effort flew
over United's bar, HT and 0 - 0 and a coffee was called
upon to keep awake!
Five
minutes into the second half saw another fine stop by
Luke when Llanber were awarded a free kick some 35 yards
out, United's 'wall' opened like the Red Sea allowing
Euron Davies's through which Luke saw late and blind,
but foiled the attempt. The next quarter of an hour passed
much the same as the first half, but after 65 minutes
David Noel Williams' cross from the left side was cleared
off the line. Another chance fell to David Noel Williams
a minute later when his 25 yard drive was finely saved
by Llanber's keeper. The 71st minute saw ex-Llanberis
youngster Gwyn Pritchard Jones given a fine chance to
put United in the lead but unfortunately his scuffed the
effort.
With
15 minutes remaining, the Referee took time out to get
his bunions sorted by the Llanberis physio, but once play
resumed he was back to his usual self and trying his best
to ruin an already drab encounter! The resumption saw
Martin Bohana replacing Gwyn Pritchard Jones up field
and this lifted United and got them out of second gear,
and with 5 minutes remaining Mathew Phillips gat a couple
of fine crosses into the area, but unfortunately none
of his colleagues had envisaged his capability and both
chances went begging. Aled Owen had the next chance after
86 minutes, when David Noel Williams was fouled on the
left wing his resulting free-kick found the back post
but driven low, but Aled's diving header lacked pace and
was easily picked up by the Llanber keeper.
The
last minute of the game brought loud shouts of cheer from
the Llanrug supporters when David Noel Williams, Martin
Bohana and Carl Griffiths played riot in the area, which
eventually saw Carl coolly finish to the keepers left.
Four minutes of injury time was added for the ref's bunions,
however the score remained 0-1, and very pleasing three
points for United.
Next
up, the reverse fixture at Eithin Duon on the 27th December,
no doubt another tough encounter, but let's hope for a
better match for the spectators!
