Six-goal
thriller as United host local rivals Llanberis
CHRISTMAS is a time for sharing and both teams were relatively
happy after splitting the points in a festive season six-
goal thriller at Eithin Duon.
Saturday's derby came seven days after Llanrug had edged
a 1-0 verdict in a dire game at Llanberis, but the return
was much more entertaining. "At
the end of the day 3-3 was a fair result," said United
player manager Aled Owen. "We
were 2-1 up at half time and if we'd taken our chances
at the start of the second half we could have finished
them off, but with 3-3 everyone was happy and there was
a good atmosphere in the pub afterwards."
Determined Llanberis started the better with Owen himself
forced to clear an early attempt off the line. But
then Llanrug took a ninth minute lead, Mathew Phillips
finishing from close range after meeting a throw-in from
brother Gethin. The Railwaymen equalised on 39 minutes
when the ball came to Guto Llewelyn about 20 yards out
and although he scuffed his shot it found the net with
home keeper Luke Hughes unsighted.
Llanrug regained the advantage three minutes before the
break when Mathew Phillips broke down the left and Carl
Griffiths was in the right place to convert his cross.
After the turnaround Phillips beat the visiting defence
with a fine run but fired over from a good position and
Griffiths also went close twice.
The hosts paid the price when on 58 minutes Cemlyn Williams
was on hand to make it 2-2.
In the 72nd minute Gwyn Jones put Llanrug ahead for a
third time with an eight-yard strike, but still Peris
were not finished and on 77 minutes Jason Joyce plundered
a third equaliser.
