United
kept at bay by Llyfni star keeper Sheret............
United
travelled the short distances to Llanllyfni without influential
midfielders Dan Pyrs and Carl Wayne Jones and their absence
was truly noticeable. Dan was on one of his jaunts abroad
whilst Carl Wayne preferred the attraction of the odd
shaped ball down in Cardiff (a wise man beside me a Llanllyfni
said "they'll have enough time to watch rugby when
their 50 and too old to play football"!). Back into
the starting line-up came fit again Andrew Williams in
place of Dan and Martin Bohana had a start in place of
Carl Wayne Jones.
Having
beaten Llanllyfni 7 - 1 at Eithin Duon last October, and
the league table showing Llanllyfni had to date won three,
drawn two and lost nine, I'm sure Aled Owen was feeling
confident before leaving Penbont on Saturday even with
the absentees previously mentioned. But, the antics of
player-manager Kevin Sheret between Llanllyfni's posts
coupled with the poor surface at the King George V field
left Aled's men leaving with two points dropped!
Far
from a classic encounter, the game nonetheless should
have been dead and buried before half time. Gavin Edwards
tested Sheret after five minutes, when his shot from around
20 yards was tipped over. The resulting corner from David
Noel Williams was met square by Gethin Phillips however
his goal bound effort was headed off the line onto the
bar and cleared. Another David Noel corner on 13 minutes
was met by Gareth Eifion's boot however was blocked back
to Charlie who should have crossed back into the danger
area however went for goal and his thunderous effort struck
the nearby upright.
After
22 minutes I couldn't believe my eyes and ears, a very
strange incident occurred. It wasn't that the Referee,
Mr A Rowlands from Llangefni had missed a blatant foul
on Gareth Eifion and he was left injured on the ground,
but, can you believe this - Alun Pierce was shouting at
David Noel to 'Calm Down' - You had to be there, I'm sure
somebody reading this won't believe it if they weren't
there!!!
Chris
Joyce saw Kevin Sheret off his line after 29 minutes,
and whilst he should have had a go from the halfway line,
he carried the ball a few yards but his effort went way
over. Next chance came to Andrew Williams, Gavin Edwards
released him down the left flank, and with only the goalie
to beat from within the area on the left side he failed
to chip and produced a fine save from Sheret. The next
couple of chances fell to Llanllyfni's number 9, he found
himself one-on-one with United's custodian Luke Hughes,
but his effort lacked venom and direction and went wide.
Within two minutes he struck Luke's right post from 10
yards out. The resulting clearance saw Gareth Eifion's
fine cross from just inside Llanllyfni's half finding
the feet of Gavin Edwards however his effort was initially
blocked by Llanllyfni's centre half but his second chance
went a yard wide, HT 0-0.
It
didn't take long from the resumption for United to take
a deserved lead, David Noel's cross from the right side
was net by a diving Andrew Williams and he headed home
to Sheret's right. The lead didn't last long, 14 minutes
in fact when Llanllyfni substitute Adrian Griffiths found
the United defence having a snooze, when he directed a
fine header passed Luke Hughes from a left sided corner.
The
rest of the game was pretty much United's bar a couple
of corners awarded to Llanllyfni which United defended
well apart from a disallowed goal after 85 minutes when
the referee saw a push in the area, thank God he saw that
one, no one else did, and to be honest I thought it was
a cracking header. The referee seemed to see things that
didn't happen and didn't see things that blatantly did
happen - funny old game!!
United
had a number of efforts with Andy forcing save after save
from Kevin Sheret, and Eifion Williams heading a foot
or so high from a corner, Gareth Eifion heading wide,
Gavin Rogerson and Carl Griffiths forcing saves and the
miss of thee game came off Andy's head in the dying minutes,
an easier effort than his goal he headed over the bar
from a Gareth Eifion cross. In the last minute Gavin Edwards
struck the post and Chris Joyce had a sudden rush of blood
to his head when he booted from 35 yards, but his effort
went very high and very wide!
All
in all a disappointing day at the office for Aled Owen's
men, Kevin Sheret was definitely the busiest of the two
keepers, and Andy, Gareth Eifion and Gavin Edwards were
the busiest of the forwards but the lack of finishing
and the heroics of Llanllyfni's keeper proved too much
- once again!!!
Next
up is the return of Conwy Utd to Eithin Duon, who beat
United's neighbours Llanberis on Saturday and one thing's
for certain, the finishing will have to be much better
if United are going to get anything from the game.
