UNITED
GET OFF TO A FINE WIN @ EITHIN DUON
United
advance to the first round of the Welsh Cup after
a convincing 5-1 win at Eithin Duon against Spar
Mid Wales League outfit Llanrheadr. It was exactly
the same result when both clubs met at Eithin
Duon on the 6th October 2007 in a Welsh Cup 2nd
Round tie.
United
commenced brightly and were soon rewarded on six
minutes, central defender Eifion Williams fine
pass released striker Mathew Phillips through
on goal, he cleverly rounded Paul Edwards the
visiting keeper and coolly slotted the ball into
the empty net to give United a dream start.
On
ten minutes midfielder David Noel Williams pinpoint
pass released striker Carl Griffiths through on
goal, Griffiths effort brought a fine save from
Edwards the visiting keeper. But within two minutes
Edwards was helpless, as Griffiths unleashed a
fine strike from just outside the penalty area
at an angle to the top corner of the net to double
United's advantage.
United
were well in control at this stage but despite
dominating possession and creating several goal-scoring
opportunities they failed to capitalise. A fine
run by striker Mathew Phillips was ended when
he was brought down in the penalty area on thirty-six
minutes; club captain David Noel Williams made
no mistake from the resulting penalty to give
United a 3-0 advantage at the interval.
The
visitors enjoyed their best spell of the match
in the early part of the second period, within
a minute of the resumption a fine headed effort
from a corner brought a tremendous point blank
save from United goalkeeper Aled Williams. But
United's rearguard weathered the visitor's pressure,
well marshalled by central defenders Martin Bohana
and Eifion Williams.
A fine
move involving fullback Chris Joyce and striker
Mathew Phillips was superbly executed by young
midfielder Gwyn Pritchard Jones, unleashing a
thunderous volley to the bottom corner of the
net from twenty yards to give United a 4-0 advantage
on sixty-three minutes. And within a minute striker
Mathew Phillips scored his second goal with a
cool finish following an excellent through ball
by midfielder David Noel Williams.
With
the match virtually won and quarter of an hour
remaining United gave youngsters Gavin Richardson
and Iwan Arwel Jones run outs for Bohana and Phillips.
Llanrheadr got a consolation goal on seventy-seven
minutes a fine finish by substitute Aaron Poole.
An
excellent start to the new season, and as a result
United can look forward to welcoming Pwllheli
to Eithin Duon on Saturday 13th September for
a 1st Round tie of the Welsh Cup.
