Stalemate
was probably a fair result for United at Llanrwst
United were taught a real lesson in football on Saturday,
when they were severely hammered by a fantastic Liverpool
side, and more or less told Shrek to stick his hatred
of LFC up his arse! The league may well be out of sight
but the bragging rights are truly on Merseyside this week
with the Theatre of Dreams being turned into the Theatre
of Nightmares for Alex Ferguson's men.
Oops,
sorry wrong game! LLANRUG UNITED
travelled to Llanrwst early in order they could watch
the first half of the mauling at Old Trafford, and with
Gareth Eifion suspended and Gavin Edwards once again a
no-show, Aled Owen was forced into some changes. Gwyn
Pritchard Jones and Gethin Green were called into action
in what turned up to be another 90 minutes of noticing
the referee and his mistakes, which cost Llanrug dearly!
Llanrug
played the better football throughout the encounter, however
the lack of a Centre Forward coupled with bad refereeing
meant that all the possession United had was fruitless
in the end. Within minutes United were in Llanrwst's keeper's
face when Carl Griffiths took the ball down the left flank
and worked a nice one-two with David Noel Williams but
could not penetrate Llanrwst's goal. Two corners were
awarded within seconds of each other with the second seeing
David Noel shooting from outside the area, but his effort
went a couple of yards wide.
Over
to the right side next, when Dan Pyrs swept the ball from
the centre to Andy Williams, who in space had time to
pull the ball back to Gethin Green but his effort was
directed straight at Ian Roberts in-between the host's
posts. After 18 minutes Llanrwst had their first chance
to take the lead, they were awarded a free-kick in the
centre of the park, and the delivery into the box saw
Luke Hughes coming off his line to collect but failed
in his effort which was cleared off the line by Captain
Marvel, Eifion Williams.
The
22nd minute saw Chris Joyce winning the ball on the centre
line on his usual left side which he took into the area
and attempted a one-two with Gethin Green, but with only
the keeper to beat, he had gone to an off-side position
before collecting the return from Gethin. A case of Mr
Joyce being to fast with his reaction, never thought I'd
have the chance of saying that!! Within three minutes
Joyce turned into United's saviour at the other end, Luke
once again came off his line to collect a cross and once
again missed, with Joyce clearing off the line this time
- he was like a whippet all afternoon! A minute later
it was Carl Wayne Jones' turn to save the day, when he
cleared off the line from a corner.
The
38th minute was when the referee, Mr Allan Rowlands from
Llangefni earned his match fee for Llanrwst, a blatant
foul on Gethin Green went Llanrwst's way just outside
the centre circle in United's half, the ball was floated
into the 6 yard box and headed in by Rhys Griffiths from
around three yards out, a total injustice. Only two more
minutes gone and Llanrwst were gifted a golden opportunity
to double their advantage when Gethin Phillips for some
reason stopped the ball going over for a goal-kick and
straight to the host's number 7, but he sliced his effort
some 15 yards wide.
A
minute before the interval and Llanrug had the chance
to level things off, the ball was cleared off the line
from a corner and Gethin Phillips header from the clearance
went a foot or so over the bar, half time and 1-0.
The
opening ten minutes of the second half saw chances fall
to Llanrug and Llanrwst but they were not taken, but by
far the best move of the game came in the 56th minute
when David Noel levelled things off. Carl Wayne Jones
won the ball on the centre line on the right side, he
found Gethin Green in space just outside the area, who
turned and released Charlie down the centre of the box,
who in turn made no mistakes when he coolly placed the
ball passed Ian Roberts' extended left hand and into the
back of the net, 1 - 1 and a contender for the goal of
the season?
The
hour mark saw a bit of a fracas in the United box when
Chris Joyce accidently (!!) floored Llanrwst's young No
9 not to the amusement of his team mates, however the
resulting free kick by Lee Allen from just outside the
area went a few yards over the bar. A couple of minutes
later and Luke was called into action to save an effort
from Llanrwst's No 9, from a throw-in in their own half,
Lee Allen collected and delivered a fine pass to Llanrwst's
No 9, who ventured into the area and delivered a fine
goal bound effort to Luke's nearside, however Luke made
a fine stop to deny him.
Andrew
Williams had the chance to give United the lead after
71 minutes when Dan Pyrs found him in space on the right
side, but instead of delivering a cross to Charlie or
Gethin who were waiting in the 6 yard area, he went for
glory but his tame effort was never going to worry Llanrwst's
keeper.
United
had a shout for a penalty in injury time when Andy was
brought down unfairly, but not so according to Mr Rowlands,
Full Time and possibly a fair result considering the chances
that both sides had. Next up are Glan Conwy at Eithin
Duon on Saturday in the semi final of United's favourite
cup, the Normac Cookson Cup. Let's hope there are no Rallies
in the area and that injured David Noel will recover from
the knock he picked up during his man of the match performance
on Saturday.
