Mathews
steals the show for Nefyn at Eithin Duon
United suffered
their first loss of the season at the hands of Nefyn Utd
on Wednesday evening in a hard fought and draining encounter.
It could be seen from early on that it was going to be
on of those nights for United, as chances went begging
in the first half, and the game should have been well
and truly won by the interval, but despite clear goal
scoring opportunities, it wasn't to be.
Llanrug strikers
Mathew Phillips and Richard Evans had half a dozen chances
to take the lead and indeed take the game beyond the visitors,
however following a fine display by the pair on Saturday
against Llanrwst, the target seemed to have shrunk for
this mid-week encounter, with a number of efforts from
both, and indeed United's mid-filed duo, Dan 'the man'
Pyrs and David Noel Williams also going astray!
A Man of the
Match performance by ex-Llanrug striker turned Nefyn defender;
Gwion Roberts made life difficult for United's strike
force, by being first to nearly every through-ball down
United's left flank. Half time; 0 - 0!
On 64 minutes,
with the match seemingly at a deadlock, United's manager
Aled Owen turned to more seasoned veterans for some inspiration
and so on came Robert H Williams for youngster Carl Griffiths,
but despite increased pressure down the right flank, it
was Nefyn who broke the deadlock, a throw in from the
right flighted United's defence falling nicely for Nefyn's
front man Brian Mathews, who blasted into the back of
United's net on 73 minutes.
After a further
five minutes, another youngster made way for another veteran,
on came the boss Aled Owen in place of Gwyn Pritchard
Jones, and whilst trying to work the ball up-field, a
move involving the boss and central defender Eifion Williams
resulted in a rare mistake, which saw the ball given away
cheaply on 80 minutes, which resulted in Nefyn's midfield
threading a through-ball to Eddie Palmer who in turn supplied
a fine cross for unmarked Brian Mathews to head home low
from six yards, leaving United's keeper, Aled Williams
with no chance.
The final ten
minutes saw United pushing to salvage the game or even
a consolation goal, but it was all to no avail. Considering
all the chances that went begging it left a bitter taste,
but hopefully lesson learned in readiness for Holywell
Town's visit on Saturday, who enjoyed a moral boosting
victory at home against much fancied Glan Conwy on Tuesday
evening.
