A Much better performance not enough for United at the Rec….

Another week with United's squad down to the bare bones, a total of 18 player were unavailable this Saturday, which saw the first team travel to much fancied Pwllheli with once again 7 first team regulars missing, with Pwllheli looking to defend an unbeaten league record ti didn't look good for Aled Owen's men. The Reserves also travelled to Talysarn with only 11 men!

The lack of players saw United's Central Defender, Martin Bohana take a not so usuall role these days as a lone striker, and another goalkeeping debut, this time with youngster Luke Hughes between United's posts in for injured Aled Williams. Andrew Williams's absence (holiday) saw a start for another youngster from Penisarwaun in the form of Gavin Rogerson, and with Bohana up front, Aled Owen stepped into the Centre Half Role. Also missing were Carl Wayne Jones and Gavin Edwards with injuries, Richie Evans and Robert H Jones (work & family commitments) and Carl Griffiths (suspended).

Pwllheli opened the scoring with a hotly contest penalty, with Bontnewydd's Gareth Jones pointing to the spot on 7 minutes when one of Pwllheli's men walked into United defence in Ronaldo like fashion. Gwyn Jones made no mistake, leaveing United stand-in keeper Luke Hughes with no chance, striking hard & low to the left. Bontnewydd's GW Jones might find this web-site of use 'www.specsavers.co.uk'!

Ex-Llanrug keeper and centre forward, Kevin Davies proved once again to be a key factor, he protected his area very well and was first to most of the crosses United mustered into the area, but United worked well in feeding the ball forward and found problems in the last third.

Pwllheli's second came from a defensive error, Aled Owen listened to a shout from the keeper, but in all honesty should have cleared a cross from the left, but left the ball only for Luke to completley miss and allow Ben Chippendale to tap in at the far post to claim his first of the afternoon.

This woke-up United, and in all hoesty United played the better football throughout the encounter and on 40 minutes, Dan Pyrs, who had already claimed his 5th Man of the Match by this time latched on to a through ball from David Noel Williams and beat the offside trap, to cooly take the ball around Kevin Davies and slot home at an accute angle. Most of Llanrug's travelling support thought that Dan had taken the ball too far, but NOT me, I had confidence in him! The smile on his face said it all - a goal and Man of the Match on its way, he knew that the Chairman's wallet would be £10.00 lighter by the end of the afternoon!! HT, 2-1.

The second half started just as the 1st had finished, with United playing the better football, but on 55 minutes, Ben Chippendale claimed his second in spectacular style, a thunderous shot from the left just within United's area left Luke with an unstoppable effort. United's reply was almost immediate, when Martin Bohana scored from around 12 yards when Pwllheli's defence failed to clear and the ball eluded the advancing Kevin Davies.

Althought United went looking for the equalizer, a solo effort by ex-Liverpool John Paul Roberts saw him chipping high from 18 yards which yet again left Luke with no chance. FT, 4 - 2.

Although a disappointing few weeks, United can take some heart from this game in as much they played better the Pwllheli throughout the 90 minutes, and much better than the previous two cup games. Lets hope for the return of some influential players for the vist of Llanllyfni to Eithin Duon next Saturday.
