Match Report By Huwsi

Pen Lleyn side prove too strong for Aled Owen's men once again!!!

A bad day at the office for United boss Aled Owen as he puts his hands up and take the blame by admiting that both of Pwllheli's goals were down to a couple of minutes lapse in concentration by him.

A bitter blow for United was the addition of David Noel Williams to the list of 'unavailables' not due to his previous weekend's exploits in Cardiff on his 'Stag Do' I hasten to add, but the medics have ruled him out until he undergoes further tests (By the way, did anyone see Barry John in Cardiff?!!) Richie Evans has officially retired, preferring the banks of the Dyfi estuary and the company of salmon and trout to his United team-mates, very fishy!! Some good news for Aled Owen was the return of influential midfielder, and much missed Carl Wayne Jones.

Pwllheli had a golden opportunity to take an early lead on 5 minutes however Gwyn Jones one-on-one effort was tipped over the bar by United's goalkeeper Luke Hughes. But from that point, United upped the ante, and made the Pwllheli defence look very average, but shot after shot lacked power, which resulted in easy pick-ups for Kevin Davies. On 25 minutes, Davies pulled of a great save denying United's Gavin Edwards' fine effort from around 18 yards, at full stretch he tipped the ball over the bar, and got rewarded by the referee with a Goal kick, not the first nor the last time the referee made bad decisions I hasten to add!

The reminder of the half continued in much of a similar fashion, but on 42 minutes Pwllheli once again had a chance to take an interval lead, however United's keeper Luke Hughes had other ideas when he pulled of a double save from ex-Llanrug duo Chris Griffiths and Gwyn Jones. Another ex-Llanrug player Goalie and Centre Forward Kevin Davies in-between the visitors posts was by far the busier of the two keepers during the first 45 minutes, however the lack of venom in United's finishing proved to be decisive once again, HT & 0-0.

It didn't take long for Pwllheli to take advantage of United's inability to score, a Pwllheli right sided corner on 52 minutes, saw Ian Williams score with a free header, the United defence opening like the Red Sea. A minute later, United had a free kick just within their own half, Chris Joyce found the left side corner flag, however no one from United saw his vision, but Kevin Davies kicked up field, and found Gwyn Jones who beat the offside trap some 40 yards out, and left one-to-one with Luke and this time made no mistake by rounding the advancing United keeper to coolly slot home, 0 - 2.

A bazaar incident occurred four minutes later, when the referee pointed to the spot without looking at his assistant, when Pwllheli's John Paul Roberts was adjudged to have been pulled down by United's Carl Wayne Jones, which saw Carl booked for trying to proclaim his innocence, only after booking Carl did the ref decide to talk to his assistant, and change his mind and awarded a corner - what about the booking?

United had a couple of chances to salvage a point, Andy Williams heading inches over the bar after a 68 minute corner, and Carl Griffiths broke down the left flank on 72 minutes, skipping past a couple of defenders, but could not get the better of Kevin Davies. A disappointing result, the overall feeling was that United deserved something from the game, but Pwllheli's pace and fitness proved too much for the third time this season, which saw the extend their unbeaten league record to played five, won five.

There's no doubt the finishing will have to be much better next week when United travel to Llandudno Junction for United's favourite cup competition of late, the Normac Precision Cookson Cup, having reached the final in both the previous seasons.

A match report without mentioning Dan Pyrs, couldn't let it happen, not quite up to his usual form of late, had a few chances, but earlier to bed next Friday night Mr Pyrs! At least the chairman's wallet didn't suffer!
