A
fine display sees United secure victory
The field at Rhydymwyn resembled a recent photo in the
Caernarfon & Denbigh when Dafydd Phillips was pictured
in a field of sunflowers, but at Rhydymwyn it was Dafydd's
son Gethin, not a thorn between sunflowers, but a rose
between dandelions!
A
good game, and another solid performance by United who
have now beaten the top two sides in a couple of weeks,
but how on earth didn't Carl score at least three goals
before half-time only he knows, as once again this season
this match should have been well over by the interval,
but the win following 90 minutes was nonetheless very
pleasing, and made the long journey home all that bearable!
The
5th minute saw Carl Griffiths get his first chance, a
great through ball by Dan Pyrs to Carl on the left side,
he advanced into the area but his attempted chip went
straight at the keeper, who's clearance put United immediately
under pressure with the BIG man beaten on the edge of
the are it was left to Aled Owen to clear off the line.
The 7th minute saw Rhydymwyn's next chance to take the
lead, United lost the ball cheaply from a throw which
in turn saw Leighton Griffiths advance up-field from well
within his own half and with three attackers against two
the final ball from Griffiths lacked venom and proved
an easy stop for Aled Williams.
Within
minute, Andrew Williams had an oppertunity for United
to take the lead, he was released into the right side
of the area by Gareth Eifion Jones but his effort across
the goal went a yard wide. It was Rhydymwyn who broke
the deadlock after 17 minutes, a return to Chris Joyce's
short throw by Gavin Rogerson was misdirected and forced
Chris to commit a cheap foul some 25 yards out (the first
of many when he caught the opposition first, and prompted
the Chairman to re-name him 'Kamikaze Joyce', so no more
CJ, but rather KJ!), the free-kick floated in from the
right was met by a Rhydymwyn head and direct to the bottom
right corner beyond a diving Aled Williams.
After 25 minutes Gareth Eifion got some ball action, Rhydymwyn's
right back connected well and copped Gareth in the knackers
from 2 yards, he was rolling in pain and couldn't wait
for Alun to arrive with the sponge (which looked much
smaller than the usual sponge, but they say - size doesn't
matter!!).
Just
before the half hour mark Carl got his next chance, another
fine ball from Dan Pyrs from the left side to Carl in
the six yard box, but his final ball on the turn went
wide. Three minutes later and Charlie released Carl into
the left side of the area, but his effort was poor and
immediately cleared up-field, and United once more were
under pressure. Within minute Carl was once again denied,
this time by a defender off the line, it was apparent
that this wasn't going to be Carl's day! The 35th minute
saw the miss of the match, Gavin Rogerson won the ball
some 35 yards out and released Carl down the middle, but
with only the advancing keeper to beat he panicked and
shot high and wide, shocking!
Just
before half-time and it was apparent that the referee
had forgotten his cards, as well as his understanding
of the rules of the game, with Rhydymwyn getting away
with foul after foul, and even swearing at the official,
and calling him names didn't warrant a card, so much for
consistency! The final minutes of the half saw Rhydymwyn
pile on some pressure, another United throw well in Rhydymwyn's
half was lost cheaply and saw Rhydymwyn's forward win
the ball in their own penalty area and advanced up-field,
but Andy got back alongside and blocked his final goal-bound
effort for a corner. Aled Williams saved the day from
the corner when he tipped the ball against the bar, and
ensured that the score line remained at 1-0 at half-time,
and his comments that the United forwards couldn't score
in a brothel obviously didn't fall on deaf ears!
It
only took 5 minutes of the second half for Aled Owen's
half-time team talk to take effect, Charlie's great ball
in bounced over Carl Griffiths and Rhydymwyn's centre-half
and with the keeper off his line Andy Williams took advantage
by looping a header beyond the keeper and into the net.
Parity was short-lived however; Leighton Griffiths restored
the home side's lead on 55 minutes, just two minutes after
he was denied by Aled Williams with a shot from the 18
yard line. A free-kick some 25 yards out on the right
side was floated around the wall, and with Aled's vision
blocked by the wall the ball went straight though hi hands
into the right side of the net.
This
time Rhydymwyn's lead was short-lived, Charlie was floored
by the keeper when he (Di Michele style!) tried to round
the keeper on the left of the area, the referee had no
hesitation in awarding a penalty which Charlie finished
in usual style passed the keeper's right side. Another
five minutes gone and United took the lead for the first
time, a David Noel free-kick was delivered to Carl Griffiths
on the edge of the area who in turn found Andy on the
right side who chipped the keeper only to be denied by
the underside of the bar, but Carl read the game and had
advanced to the goal line and made no mistake from two
inches out!
Rhydymwyn
sensing defeat piled on the pressure for the last twenty
or so minutes, a scramble in the United 6 yard box was
eventually blocked by Charlie, and whilst Gethin Phillips
was on the floor injured and motionless, play continued
which saw Rhydymwyn hit the bar. With a quarter of an
hour remaining Rhydymwyn had a free-kick some 30 yards
out which scrapped the post on it's was for a goal-kick.
United were also advancing but no clear cut opportunities
came to extend the lead, and so after 90 minutes the score
remained at 2-3.
Nothing
now until next Saturday when Glan Conwy come to Eithin
Duon for the last match of the season, and having beaten
the first and second placed teams recently, to finish
on a high on Saturday would make things look a bit better
in the final league table.
