United
loose by the odd goal in seven again
Rhydymwyn
arrived in Eithin Duon in buoyant mood, second in the
league and wanting revenge for their 5-1 defeat in the
Cookson Cup back in early March.
Missing
for United were inspirational midfielders Dan Pyrs and
Andrew Williams due to work commitments, therefore manager
Aled Owen gave rare starts to youngsters Marvin Pritchard
and Gavin Rogerson.
The
visitors started the brightest and striker Tom McElmeel
gave them an early lead lobbing the ball beyond the advancing
United keeper Dewi Jones in the sixth minute. Despite
the early setback United kept to their game plan, they
enjoyed their fair share of possession but did not really
threaten the visitor's goal.
Following
the interval it was all United in a blistering fifteen
minute spell, the match was turned on its head. Club Captain
and central defender Eifion Williams equalised for United
within a minute of the resumption, a thunderous strike
to the top corner of the net from twenty yards out. And
within two minutes United took the lead, Mathew Phillips
with a fine finish following a fast flowing move involving
David Noel Williams and Carl Griffiths.
At
this stage United were rampant, a long ball by full-back
Chris Joyce realised Mathew Phillips through on goal,
but Phillips strike with his weaker right foot flew over
the visitor cross-bar. On the hour mark United doubled
their lead, a fine move involving Carl Wayne Jones, Carl
Griffiths and Mathew Phillips, whose pass gave Gareth
Eifion Jones the opportunity to round the visitor's keeper
and pass the ball into the empty net to give United a
deserved third goal.
But
within two minutes Dean Hughes gave the visitors hope
of a revival, a headed goal timed at sixty two minutes
from a free kick delivered from the half way line into
United's penalty area. From the restart David Noel Williams
long range strike form the half way line gave Paul Turner
the visiting goalkeeper plenty to worry about as he tipped
the ball wide for a United corner.
A
fine strike from thirty five yards out from the visitors
Jay Hughes brought a flying save from Dewi Jones on sixty
five minutes. Gareth Eifion Jones failed to capitalise
on a fine through ball by Eifion Williams on sixty seven
minutes, his strike going agonisingly wide of the far
post. And within a minute David Noel Williams gave Mathew
Phillips the same opportunity but Mathew failed to capitalise.
United
were made to pay for there missed opportunities, a two
minute purple patch by the visitors turned the match on
its head again. A long searching ball into United's penalty
area was headed by lanky midfielder Dafydd Roberts into
the path of striker Tom McElmeel who found the back of
the United net with a fine strike. Before United could
re-group McElmeel found the net again a header at the
far post to gain his hat-trick and the maximum three points
for his side.
An
enthralling seven goal thriller for the neutral, but a
dire pill to swallow for the United faithfull, which has
been the case for most part of the season!!!!!!!!!!!
