Huwsi's view...........

SIX of the best see United romp to victory.......

United licked their wounds following the cup defeat to so called lower opponents last week, and eventually killed off Amlwch Town with a very impressive performance. United however, they did not get things all their own way, the first 45 minutes or so were quite evenly matched, with the score at 1 – 0 at half time.

United’s want-away Right Back and long throw expert Gethin Phillips had a shock transfer to local rivals Llanberis sanctioned by Aled Owen in mid week, which meant a start for Marvin Pritchard at right back and with Carl Wayne Jones absent, Gareth Eifion Jones moved to the centre and Andrew Williams had his first start in months, a just reward for his substitute appearance at Gwalchmai the previous week.

Although I did not see a lot of the game as I was serving fine cuisine in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ I have been reliably informed of the build up to all the goals, and therefore I cannot accept any liability for any short comings in the report! United had a few more chances than Amlwch in the first half, but lack of quality finishing meant that United had the narrowest of leads going into the interval. Carl Griffiths had a good chance to give United the lead after 24 minutes; however his near post strike was blocked by the visiting keeper for a corner which eventually saw Ceirion Williams’ effort from 20 yards or so gather snow before landing somewhere near the river Seiont!! Mathew Phillips got the opener on 26 minutes however, Chris Joyce found David Noel Williams in the centre of the park, who in turn delivered a fine over the top ball to Phillips who then kept a cool head from ten yards, having advanced into the left side of the area, he had Rhys Roberts up front in support, but took his effort well with a powerful drive to the bottom corner, which the keeper could only get a hand to before picking the ball out of the net.

Amlwch came close in the 38 th minute, however a strike from 20 yards went two feet wide of the left upright, and so half time came and United despite having had most of the chances were only narrowly in the lead.

The second half produced a lot more from United, and I’m told it was down to the half time ‘Tesco Value’ Jaffa cakes provided by Charlie that did the trick. Although I think that Rooney had too much of them, and had a sugar hit when he mistook the corner flag for the ball (in typical Charlie fashion) when he lined up to take a corner, but the least said the better! Mathew Phillips came close to claim his second within three minutes of the resumption, a fine left sided corner by Carl Griffiths, but Phillips directed his header a couple of feet over the bar.

It only took five minutes however for United to double the lead, a move once again started by Chris Joyce, this time from a throw to Carl Griffiths, who lost his marker and crossed into the area, however a defender deflected the cross with his head, which saw the ball loop and gave David Noel Williams the chance with a flying overhead kick, and he made no mistake from ten yards with the ball hitting the top far corner of the net.

Rhys Roberts was the scorer of the third on 65 minutes, Gareth Eifion took a quick free kick in the centre of the park, to Charlie who in turn found the feet of Mathew Phillips with a short pass, and he in turn beat his man and advanced to the by-line and delivered an inch perfect cross for Rhys Roberts to head home from within the six yard box.

Amlwch had a reply in the 67 th minute, and I’m sure Dave Ball wishes I hadn’t seen that one either, but sorry Dave it was a shocker, I don’t know if it was an own goal, or did Gethin Roberts manage to get his head to it just before it crossed the line, but Ball got his butter fingers to the ball from a corner but failed to actually hold on, so he directed it towards goal and we’ll give the benefit of the doubt to Amlwch’s Gethin Roberts.

Andrew Williams made it 4-1 in the 77 th minute, Gareth Eifion the provider when he won the ball in the centre and found Andy with a fine through ball, who in turn slotted under the keeper. Charlie should have made it 5-1 a minute later, but United were once again guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net, and having done all the hard work, he should have taken the chance from eight yards or so, but forward he went and eventually got blocked for a corner. Carl Griffiths latched on to the corner from around 25 yards out, but it was down the throat of the visiting keeper.

Amlwch’s No. 4 got sent off in the 84 th minute for lashing out at Rooney, the referee did not see the incident, but his assistant flagged for the offence and so he got his marching orders. Andy got his second in the 87 th minute, the referee’s assistant flagged for a push on the left flank some 10 yards from Amlwch’s by-line, the free kick was taken by Joyce to Charlie on the left who got the better of the right back and pulled the ball back to Phillips, who’s shot hit a defender but landed within reach of Andy who tapped in at full stretch. Andy was instrumental in the sixth goal as well, Aled Owen won the ball in defence, found Charlie who released Andy with a 30 yarder but as he was chopped down advancing in the penalty area, and the referee once again had to liaise with his assistant before showing Amlwch a second red card, this time a last man scenario, and of course Charlie made no mistake from the spot, sending the keeper to the wrong side.

A very pleasing result and three much needed and welcome three points, which moved United from 14 th to 12 th in the league with four games in hand on most. A trip to Llandyrnog next Saturday before league leaders Rhydymwyn visit Eithin Duon on the 6 th of February.
