Welsh League Division 2 - Challenge Cup Final

LLANRUG UNITED 4 - 1 LLANDUDNO RES

18th May, 1951 @ Farrar Road, Bangor.

Llanrug United with a 4- 1 victory over Llandudno Resrvese came the winners of the Welsh League Divison 2 Challenge Cup in the final at Bangor on Saturday night 18th May, 1951. Throught they held the upper hand in a match which was fought at a fast pace and which was brimful of good football. It was a typical cup tie. From the outset Llanrug who were the finalist last season and were beaten after three meetings by Portdinorwic, were the most impressive side. Llanrug opened the scoring in the early stages, Jimmy Hogan sent a fierce drive and Knill the Llandudno goalkeeper dived on the ball on the goal line. However the Referee Mr E Rowlands of Bangor, was of the opinion the ball had crossed the goal line, and a goal was awarded.

This early success spurred Llanrug into even greater and more forceful action and Llandudno had a hectic time. Despite this, the youthful Llandudno players held their own and Emrys Hughes in the Llanrug goal was brought to his knees to save a shot from K Williams. The greatest fault with Llanrug attack at this stage was their weak finishing and the tendency to walk the ball into the net. Gwilym Owen, following good work from Bert Jones and Stanley Wyn Jones, received possession on the left and as he was bursting through on the Llandudno goal, M Davies handled the ball in the area. Seth Edwards made no mistake with the spot kick to score Llanrug's number two.

Soon after Emrys Hughes the Llanrug keeper brought off a smart save from Mullock. At the other end Jimmy Hogan was a trifle wide on two occasions following neat passes by Seth Edwards and Gwilym Owen. Llanrug's third goal was a fierce drive by Seth Edwards which hit the underside of the crossbar. Soon after, Knill in the Llandudno goal, made a fine save from a close in drive by Stanley Wyn Jones. Jimmy Hogan was a lively leader and he was well supported by his colleagues. He scored Llanrug's fourth goal, and this was the best goal of the match. After receiving the ball from Seth Edwards, the centre forward by a series of clever headers beat the Llandudno backs and crashed home a stinging drive.

Llandudno never gave up trying and after a brilliant run, Mullock beat three defenders and sent a powerful drive to the Llanrug goal from the right and his shot was deflected into the net by William Pritchard the Llanrug right back. This was Llandudno's only goal, and they were up against a rock - like defence.

Llanrug United : Emrys Hughes - William Pritchard - Thomas O Roberts - Evan Owen - Donald Kimlock Macdonald - Bert Jones - Jimmy Hogan - Seth Edwards - Emyr Jones - Stanley Wyn Jones - Gwilym Owen.

Presentation : The Cup was presented to Llanrug United captain Donald Kimlock Macdonald by Mr T King of Llandudno Junction, a member of the Welsh League management committee who compliment both teams on providing such an excellent game. However there was no doubt that Llanrug United deserved the cup.
