TOWN
NET SIX IN FINAL TRIAL
CAERNARFON
TOWN 6 - 1 LLANRUG UNITED
Caernarfon
Town played calmly and confidently in their final
pre-season match to gain a comfortable victory over
Llanrug United at the Oval on Saturday. They quickly
settled down into a commanding role and were allowed
to play the game at their own unhurried pace. And
it was this composure that kept them from making defensive
errors of any great significance. After 25 minutes
their trialist fullback David Horran, opened their
accounts with a fine shot just to the left of the
Llanrug goalie. After that came a series of Caernarfon
attacks, but a second goal eluded them for quite some
time. In fact, it was the seventh minute of the second
half that Maldwyn Lloyd, netted their second goal,
and it seemed to be the spur for their goal seeking
forwards. Less than a minute later John Hammond hit
the cross bar.
Very active up
front for Caernarfon was Owen Parry, who on a number
of occasions made some useful and dangerous crosses
from the wing, and was involved in setting up of two
of the goals. Eighteen minutes into the second half
an intended pass by Gerald Parry to one of his teammates
was deflected from a Llanrug defender to Caernarfon
inside forward Terry Smith, who netted easily. Five
minutes later Gerald Parry himself scored from 25
yards out with a low and hard drive into the back
of the net. In the 73rd minute came one of the best
moves of the game Terry Smith on the right hand passed
to Owen Parry who was running alongside him, Parry
dummied a Llanrug defender, and returned the ball
to Smith, who immediately sent it to Gerald Parry
who was completely unmarked, and he netted effortlessly.
However, Caernarfon
didn't have matters all their own way, Llanrug played
some attractive football on occasions, and had their
moments, even though they were few and far between.
Eifion Hughes was a keen tackler and a calculating
schemer. The degree of understanding between Llanrug
midfield players was at times extremely entertaining
and should prove to be a great facet for them in their
Caernarfon and District League fixtures. Inside forward
Meirion Hughes, was their busiest attacker and his
goal on the hour was well-deserved consolation.
Caernarfon ended
the scoring seven minutes from time when Terry Smith
scored his second goal. Caernarfon, in this game showed
the sharpness up front that they lacked for most part
of last season, and it this performance is anything
to go by, it looks as if their goal-scoring problem
has been solved.

issue with goals by Alwyn Parry and Dennis Williams.

netted by Adrian Roberts, five minutes from the final
whistle following a handling offence.

which came in the second half, was scored by B.Davies.
C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 19th November, 1971.
HIRAEL SHOCK
FOR RANGERS - The shock result of the day in the
Caernarfon & District League on Saturday was the
home defeat of Mountain Rangers by lowly placed Hirael
United. Hirael won by three clear goals. This was
the Rangers second defeat in successive Saturday's
and they can have no excuses for Hirael fully deserved
their success. The Rangers never lived up to their
reputation and even when Hirael were down to nine
men at a late stage in the second half they failed
to score. Hirael were a goal up at the interval and
added two more in the second period, their scorers
being David Davies (2) and Phil Watts.
LED ALL THE
WAY - Criccieth Town led all the way in beating
Penygroes & District 4 - 1. This was Criccieth's
third victory in as many games and they fully merited
the points. Spiros Parry, who comes from Penygroes

into the net of his home side's team and other goals

& Denbigh Herald - 26th November, 1971.
LLANRUG, TALYSARN
MARCH ON - Of the five Caernarfon & District
League clubs engaged in the third round of the North
Wales Coast FA Junior Cup on Saturday two of them,
Llanrug United and Talysarn Celts, made sure of a
place in the next round with smart away victories.
Mountain Rangers were knocked out of the competition
by Rhyl Wanderers, who beat them 4 - 2 at Rhyl. Nefyn
United were leading by a lone goal at home against
Llanddulas, but the match was abandoned after 25 minutes
owing to the weather conditions, which prevailed.
So the game will have to be played again. Bangor Normal
College were leading by five clear goals at home against
Bagillt Hotspurs with only 15 minutes play remaining
when the game came to a halt. Some of the Bagillt
players left the field unable to continue. A decision
on this game is awaited.
HAMMERED
- Llanrug United, the League leaders, were in great
form, hammering Vale of Conwy League side, Diamond

the Celts lead in the 21st minute, but goals by Neale
(2) and Chapman ensured a 4 - 2 interval lead for
Old Colwyn. The Celts went right on top in the second
half and clinched a place in the fourth round with
goals by Joe Williams (60 minutes), W.Lloyd (65 minutes),
Gary Davies (penalty 70 minute) and Alwyn Parry (80
minutes).
EMPHATIC STUDENTS
- Bangor Normal College won comfortably 5 - 0 at home
against Bagillt Hotspurs, the students scorers were
E.Thomas (2), Ian Jones, Meilir Owen and Phil Brown.
Glyn Jones and Cliff Jones were the scorers for Mountain
Rangers, beaten 4 - 2 by Rhyl Wanderers.
HIRAEL HELD
- Because of the bad weather conditions only one of
the three scheduled League games was completed. This
was the match between Hirael United and Bangor University
College, which ended in the teams sharing four goals.
Hirael raced to a 2 - 1 interval lead with goals by
Phil Watts and David Evans. The students fought back
in the second half when they scored the goal that
earned them a point.
MATCH ABANDONED
- Harlech's home game with Pwllheli Reserves was
abandoned after 15 minutes with the score sheet blank,
but Llanberis home game with Criccieth Town was abandoned
before the kick-off.
C'fon & Denbigh Herald - 3rd December, 1971.
LLANRUG SET
HOT PACE AT TOP - Llanrug United are setting a
hot pace at the top of the Caernarfon & District
League, and their 4 - 2 win against Harlech Town on
Saturday gives them a five points lead. The match
was evenly poised at half time at 2 - 2. But Llanrug
soared to victory in the second period, the scores
were Arfon Lewis (2), Arwyn Roberts and Derek Sayer,
with Humphrey Williams and Billy Jones netting for
Harlech.
SMART RECOVERY
- Talysarn Celts, who are also challenging strongly
for honours, were 3 - 2 down at the interval at home
against Bangor Normal College, but they recovered
smartly in the second half to clinch a 4 - 3 victory.
Phil Brown hit an early goal for the students. Talysarn
equalised in the 20th minute through Dennis Williams,
but Eurwyn Morris restored the students' lead in the
27th minute and added another five minutes later.
Dennis Williams reduced the lead before the interval
and further goals by Glyn Jones (75th minute) and
Gary Davies (79th Minute) ensured the valuable points
for the Celts.
BIG WIN -
Bangor University College romped to a seven clear
goals home victory against Penygroes & District.
The scorers for the students, who led 3 - 0 at half
time, were S.Pritchard (3), E.Pritchard (2) and G.Jones.

- Nefyn United booked a place in the fourth round
of the North Wales Coast FA Junior Cup with a resounding

with Nefyn one goal up. In the second meeting Nefyn
lead all the way. They were two goals up at the interval;
on target for them were T.Roberts, S.Roberts, Dai
Jones and Glyn Owen. Llanddulas's solitary goal was

C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 10th December, 1971.
PWLLHELI
KEEP UP CHALLENGE
- In the only League game in the Caernarfon &
District League on Saturday Pwllheli Reserves kept
up their challenge for honours by defeating Caernarfon
Reserves at Caernarfon. It was an interesting and
evenly contested struggle with Pwllheli snatching
the points with a goal in the dying minutes. Caernarfon,
playing neat constructive football in the opening
period, created many anxious moments for the Pwllheli
defence and should have scored more than one goal
by centre forward Martin Thomas. Pwllheli came on
terms with a great goal by centre forward Geraint
Hughes. Pwllheli supplied strong pressure in the second
period and Caernarfon goalkeeper Maldwyn Williams,
brought off many good saves. But Caernarfon were desperately
unlucky in not going in front midway through this
period. After Martin Thomas had forced goalkeeper
John V.Lewis, who come from Caernarfon, to a great
save, Thomas retained possession, but his shot hit
the post and Pwllheli had an escape. With time running
out everything looked like the game ending in a draw
when Pwllheli forced a corner on the right and Howell
Lewis netted with the flag kick.
ALVES CUP
- The twelve other clubs were engaged in the first
round of the Alves Cup. Mountain Rangers, the holders,
after being 1 - 2 down at the interval staged a tremendous
late rally to win 5 - 2 away against Harlech Town.
Reg Roberts put the Rangers in front, but Humphrey
Williams and Gerald Roberts were on the target for
Harlech before the interval. Centre forward Glyn Jones
levelled the score early in the second half and Jackie
Williams gave them the lead, with Glyn Jones making
sure for the Rangers with a further two goals.
WILLIAMS'S TWO
- Talysarn Celts, who were beaten in the final of
the competition by the Rangers last season, made sure
of a place in the second round with a 2 - 0 away victory
against Bangor University College. Dennis Williams
was the hero scoring both the goals for the Celts.
SURPRISED
- The big surprise in the competition was Bangor Normal
College's two clear goals triumph over League leaders
Llanrug United. Both the students' goals came in the
last ten minutes of the match through John Davies
and E.Morris.
BIG WIN
- Criccieth Town romped into the second round with
an 8 - 1 away thrashing of Caernarfon YMCA. This was
Criccieth's biggest win of the season and sharing
in their goals haul were R.Jones (3), R.W.Taylor (2),
A.Humphreys (2) and M.Quaeck, YM's solitary goal was
scored by G.Hughes.
EXCITING MATCH
- In an exciting game Llanberis beat Nefyn United
2 - 1 at Nefyn. Roger Morgan gave Nefyn the lead but
Brian Edwards equalised. Gwilym Williams scored the
second half goal that booked a place for Llanberis
in the second round. Nefyn had a chance to equalise
when they were awarded a penalty, but Roger Morgan
failed with the spot kick.
IN THE FIRST
HALF - Penygroes & District at home were knocked
out of the competition by Hirael
United, who beat them by three clear goals; all scored
in the first half.
C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 17th December, 1971.
LLANRUG HAVE
A SEVE POINTS LEAD - Llanrug United are galloping
away at the top of the Caernarfon & District League,
and their 4 - 2 win against Mountain Rangers at Bontnewydd
on Saturday gives them a lead of seven points. Unaffected
by their surprise dismissal from the Alves Cup in
the first round by Bangor Normal College the previous
Saturday, the Llanrug boys stormed through to a merited
win, and took a big step in their bid to lift the
championship. The Rangers were the first to score,
Cedric Williams giving them an early lead, but by
the interval Llanrug were 3 - 2 up and added another
in the second half to clinch victory. Their goals
came from Arfon Lewis, Michael S.Jones, Roger Owen
and an Islwyn Jones own goal. Rangers other goal was
scored by Glyn Jones.
TALYSARN HELD
- although they surprisingly dropped a point at Bangor
against the University College, Talysarn Celts are
still in second place. The previous Saturday, at Bangor,
the Celts beat the students 2 - 0 in the first round
of the Alves Cup, but this time the students held
them to a goal-less draw. The Celts consider that
they were unlucky in not collecting both points for
Joe Williams, Dennis Williams, Alwyn Parry and Richard
Jones each hit the gaol framework.
SET-BACK
- Pwllheli Reserves also challenging for honours suffered
a setback when they were beaten 3 - 2 at Harlech Town.
The South Caernarfonshire side were a goal up through

a strong rally in the second half and slammed three
goals into the Pwllheli net, Gareth Roberts scoring
twice and Meirion Williams netting the other.
CRICCIETH POINT
- Criccieth Town sprang a surprise by holding champions
Llanberis to 1 - 1 draw at Llanberis. Criccieth are

Humphreys scored Criccieth's goal in the first half
and Llanberis equalised in the second period through
Dennis Jones.

R.Williams and K.Roberts.

- Penygroes & District stepped into the third
round of the Penrhyn Cup with a decisive 5 - 1 home
win against Hirael United. It was sweet revenge for
Penygroes as the previous Saturday they had been knocked
out of the Alves Cup at home by the Hirael boys. Scorers
for Penygroes, who had led 3 - 0 at the interval,
were R.Jones (2), R.Roberts, Maldwyn Hughes and Bryn
Jones with E.Jones scoring Hirael's solitary goal.
THRASHING
- Bangor Normal College were sure of a place in the
second round of the Penrhyn Cup by thrashing Nefyn
United 7 - 1 in the first round replay. Scorers for
the students, who led 2 - 0 at the interval were M.Owen
(3), Ian Jones (2), Phil Brown and Phil Roberts. Nefyn's
lone goal came from a penalty by T.E.Jones.
C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 24th December, 1971.
THREE CLUBS
MARCH ON IN AMATEUR CUP - Three Caeranrfon &
District League clubs made sure of a place in the
fourth round of the North Wales Coast FA Amateur Cup
on Saturday, and another club lived to fight another
day. Two clubs were knocked out of the competition.
Llanrug United the League leaders, playing at home
won the third round tie with a three clear goals victory
against Pydew Rovers, the Vale of Conway Club. Leading
by one goal in the first half when Pydew put up a
strong challenge. Llanrug made sure with two further
goals after the break, Meirion Hughes (2) and Michael
S.Jones were their marksmen.
HARD FIGHT -
Nefyn United, also at home, had to fight hard for
a place in the fourth round against Flint Youth Centre,
the unbeaten Halkyn Area League club, whom they defeated
2 -1. Tom Roberts put Nefyn in front in the first
half and Einion Jones settled the issue for them with
a second half penalty. John Gilzean scored Flint's
only goal. After a ten weeks absence Robin Parry returned
to the Nefyn goal and brought off many fine saves.
For the last stage of the match the visitors were
reduced to ten men as one of their players received
his marching orders.
STUDENTS IN
FORM - Bangor Normal College, away to Flint Old
Boys, ran out convincing 5 - 2 winners and are hotly
tipped to go far in the competition this season. The
students are playing well as a team and they thoroughly
deserved their passage into the next round at Flint.
Their goals were scored by Meilir Owen (2), Phil Brown
(2) and Daniel Roberts.
REPLAY -
Llanberis forced replay by drawing 1 - 1 away against
Rhos United, a Vale of Conway team.

Peter Griffiths were on target for Pwllheli.
GOAL-LESS DRAW
- Caernarfon Town Reserves were held to a goal-less
draw at home by Bangor University College in a game
spoilt by a strong wind. Caernarfon applied strong
pressure on the College goal during the second half,
but the students defended well. Caernarfon however,
were unlucky in not getting a points winning goal
when a shot by Kevin Roberts had the students goalkeeper
beaten mid-way through the second half, but the ball
hit the post.
HARLECH SCORE
FIVE - Harlech Town registered their second successive
home victory when they beat improved Hirael United
5 - 3. Scorers for Harlech who led 3 - 2 at the interval
were Gwynedd Roberts (2), Gwilym Roberts and Humphrey
Williams with Phil Watts (2) and D.Evans netting for
Hirael.

TWO - thanks to two goals, one in each half by
new signing Harri Griffiths, the former Talysarn Celts
player, Criccieth Town beat Caernarfon YMCA 2 - 1,
Trefor Jones netted YM's solitary goal.
C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 31st December, 1971.
LLANRUG TIGHTEN
GRIP ON TOP - Llanrug United consolidated their
position at the top of the Caernarfon & District
League by beating their neighbours, Llanberis 2 -
1 on Boxing Day. So at the half way stage of the season
Llanrug United are in a strong position. They are
seven points in front and setting a hot pace at the
top. The local derby at Eithin Duon was an exciting
affair. The teams were level at the interval and Llanrug

for Llanrug were Gwyn Edwards, a former Llanberis
winger, and Arfon Lewis, with Derwyn Jones scoring
Llanberis's solitary goal.
IN SECOND PLACE
- Pwllheli Reserves took over the second position
in the table as the result of their two clear goals
home win against their neighbours Nefyn United. Pwllheli

they scored both their goals. Their hero was Geraint
Hughes, who scored both goals.
RANGERS ON TARGET
- Talysarn Celts dropped into third position in the
table after crashing away against Mountain Rangers.

with Glyn Jones and Ken Davies scoring two apiece.
The Rangers were three goals up at the interval, and
are now only two points behind Talysarn Celts.
NORMAL GO NAP
- Bangor Normal College continue to show up well and
they were in great form crushing Caernarfon Town Reserves
5 - 0. They were only one goal up at the interval

target for the students were Ian Jones (2), Gareth
Wyn Williams, Elwyn Hughes and Meilir Owen. Victory
took the Normal to fourth place in the League.

home. They were beaten 4 - 3 by Harlech Town. Harlech's
scorers who led 2 -1 at the interval were Humphrey
Williams (2), William Roberts and Gareth Roberts,

club Rhos United on Saturday. Brian Edwards starred
in the Llanberis attack scoring three goals. The other
scorers were Iolo Owen and Adrian Jones. T.Turner
scored both Rhos United's goals.
NEFYN DISMISS
LEADERS - One of the surprises of the day was
the dismissal of Llanrug United, the Caernarfon &
District League leaders from the North Wales Coast
FA Junior Cup by Nefyn United, who beat them 4 -1
at Llanrug in the fourth round tie. For Nefyn, who
were a goal in front at half time, Tony Roberts scored

VALUABLE POINT
FOR LLANRUG - Llanrug United, the Caernarfon &
District League leaders, collected a valuable point
in their bid for the League title when they drew 0-0
away against Talysarn Celts on Saturday. As a result
of the point they gained Llanrug maintained their
five points lead at the top of the table, and are
now in a strong position. The clash at Talysarn was
an exciting affair, for Celts, in third position,
are also challenging for honours. They have played
two games fewer than Llanrug but they are still nine
points behind the leaders. The Celts did find the
back of the Llanrug net, but the Referee disallowed
the goal on the grounds of offside, to the disappointment
of the Celts fans.
EIGHT GOALS
SHARED - Pwllheli Reserves, also challenging for
honours, were surprisingly held to a 4-4 draw by lowly
placed Criccieth Town. Pwllheli have played one more
game than Llanrug but dropping a point at Criccieth
was a setback for them in the title race. Criccieth
were 2-1 in front at the interval but Pwllheli fought
back to earn a draw in a game which had plenty of
goals to keep the spectators happy. On the target
for Criccieth were Mark Quaeck (2, one a penalty),
Alun Williams and Harry Griffith. And the Pwllheli
marksmen were Geraint Hughes (2), Meirion Williams
and Tony Evans.

without reply into the Collegians net. Scorers fro
Rangers were Ken Jones, Dafydd Pierce, Gwyndaf Jones,
Ken Davies, Glyn Jones and Arthur Williams. And the
student's lone goal coming from the penalty spot.
BIG WIN
- Harlech Town registered the biggest victory of the
day when they trounced Penygroes & District 9-1.
It was Harlech's biggest win of the season, and it
came as a surprise as Penygroes have had some good
performances of late. Harlech led 3-1 at the interval,
and they turned on the style in the second half, netting
six goals without reply. On the target for them were
left wing pair Billy Jones and John Roberts with three
goals apiece, and Gareth Jones, Gwilym Jones and Ronnie
Wright, who came on as substitute. R.G.Jones scored
Penygroes's lone goal.
CLIMBING
- Llanberis as the result of their 3-1 home victory

and Tony Roberts for Nefyn.

United playing at home thrashed Caernarfon Town Reserves

at Bangor in the fourth round of the North Wales Coast
FA Junior Cup, a competition in which the students
had been tipped to go far this season. Beaumaris scorers
were D.Looms, G.Jones and G.Denham.
C'fon
& Denbigh Herald - 21st January, 1972.
LLANRUG GALLOP
CONTINUES - Llanrug United's gallop at the top
of the Caernarfon & District League continues.
Following the two point they collected with a 2-1
win away against Nefyn United on Saturday they have
now stretched their lead at the top to seven points
and look in a strong position to carry off the title.
They have collected 32 points from 18 games. They
have lost only one game and have an impressive goal
average of 63 goals for and 15 against. Only some
bad slips in their next eight games can jeopardise
their chances. Goals from Meirion Hughes and Arfon
Lewis gave them an interval lead, Nefyn pulled one
back through Tom Roberts in the second half.
HAMMERED
- Mountain Rangers hammered bottom club Caernarfon
YMCA 7-0 and as a result displaced Talysarn Celts
in third place. They were four goals ahead at the
interval and added another three after the break.
On target for the Rangers were Gareth Jones (2), Arthur
Williams (2), Reg Roberts, Ken Davies and Cedric Williams
(penalty).
IN SCORING MOOD
- Bangor University College were also in scoring mood,
crushing Caernarfon Town Reserves 5-1. Victory took
the students to the seventh spot in the table. Caernarfon
were sharing the goals with them at the interval,
both teams having scored a goal apiece. But in the
second half the students turned on the style and scored
four goals without reply. Their scorers were Brian
Jones (3), Dave Pritchard and Mike Littedyke.

EDWARD'S TREBLE
FOR LLANBERIS - Llanberis knocked Mountain Rangers
out of the Caernarfon and District League's Alves
Cup in the second round tie played at Bontnewydd on
Saturday with a 4-2 victory. The hero for Llanberis
was Brian Edwards, who scored three of their goals,
and Peter Evison scored their other goal. Both Rangers
goals were scored by Arthur Williams. The teams were
level at the interval, sharing two goals and in this
period the Rangers had a slight edge. However, in
the second half Llanberis moved better and deserved
their success.
TOWN HIT FOR
SIX - Talysarn Celt powered their way into the
third round of the competition with a six clear goals
victory over Caernarfon Town Reserves at the Oval.
Caernarfon's young side put up a good fight in the
first period and limited Talysarn to one goal scored
by Richie Jones. However, in the second half, Talysarn
turned on the heat and scored five goals through Ron
Thomas (2), Gary Davies, Glyn Jones and Dennis Williams.
During the latter stages of the match Caernarfon were
reduced to nine men as two of their players Ken Jones
and A.P.Jones, had to be helped off the field injured.
But before they left the field the Celts had scored
all their goals.
LEADERS OVERCOME
STUDENT SETBACK - Llanrug United's success run
at the top of the League continued with a 4-2 home
victory against Bangor University College. Things
did not look to well for the League leaders at half
time for the students were on level terms with them
sharing two goals. But in the second half Llanrug
stepped up their play to win convincingly. Llanrug's
scorers were Arfon Lewis (2), Roger Owen and Derek
Sayer, with Bryn Jones netting twice for the students.
PWLLHELI'S BIG

& Denbigh Herald - 4th February, 1972.
NORMAL COLLEGE
MARCH ON - For Caernarfon and District League
clubs were engaged in the North Wales Coast F.A. Amateur
Cup on Saturday, but only Bangor Normal College succeeded
in gaining direct entry into the next round. The three
other clubs have to play again to decide which of
them will go forward into the fifth round. Normal
College scraped through by the odd goals in nine in
an exciting and closely contested struggle with Gele
Athletic. The student's scorers were Meilir Owen (2),
Ian Jones, D.A.Jones and John Davies.
LAST MINUTE
EQUALISER - Llanrug United playing at home were
forced to replay by Colwyn Bay, who scored their equaliser
in a 2-2 draw in injury time. This was bad luck for
Llanrug for they had shown fine form against a strong
Bay side, which included several players who appear
regularly for the club in Division One of the Welsh
League. Llanrug were 2-1 up at the interval and it
looked as if they were set for the next round until
that late equaliser by the Bay. Gwyn Edwards scored
both Llanrug goals.
SHARED SIX GOALS
- Nefyn United and Llanberis shared six goals
in another exciting tussle. Nefyn were 2-1 up at the

A THIRD CLASH
- Hirael United and Pwllheli Reserves failed to settle

when the clubs meet at Pwllheli. There were no gaols
in the first half but in the second half they each
scored a goal, Walter Williams for Hirael and D.Humphreys

Saturday at Mountain Rangers ground in Bontnewydd.

HIRAEL
MAKE SURE IN THIRD CLASH
- The marathon second round tie of the Caernarfon
& District League's Alves Cup between Pwllheli
Reserves and Hirael United was settled on Saturday
when Hirael emerged as victors. In the first meeting
at Pwllheli the teams shared two goals and this was
the score also at Hirael in the replay. So there had
to be a second replay and this on the ground of Mountain
Rangers F.C. at Bontnewydd resulted in a 4-3 win for
Hirael, their winning goal coming in the fading minutes
of the game. Altogether the teams played 270 minutes
before the deadlock was broken. Both teams were again
evenly matched and at the break they were sharing
two goals. If the first half had been a rather tame
affair there was plenty of excitement in the second
period when five goals were scored. After Hirael had
raced to a 3-1 lead Pwllheli struck back in grand
style and scored two goals to bring the score level.
It appeared that the game would go to extra time,
but less than five minutes from time alter Williams
clinched the issue for Hirael and Gary Black scored
the other three. Pwllheli's Meirion Williams scored
his side's three goals to complete a smart hat trick.
LLANBERIS THROUGH
- In another closely contested match Llanberis knocked
Nefyn United out of the North Wales Amateur Cup in
the fourth round replay at Llanberis winning 2-1.
The teams were level at the interval, sharing two

half. Brian Edwards and Gwilym Williams scored for

were level at the interval sharing two goals, Meilir

BY HIRAEL - Llanrug United, the Caernarfon &
District League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by
Hirael United at Bangor on Saturday. Llanrug were

the table Caernarfon YMCA thrashing them by 13 clear
goals to register the biggest win of the season in

inside forward Dennis Williams. Williams not only
scored two goals himself but also made most of the

PENYGROES HAMMERED
- Llanrug United powered their way to a runaway victory
to make sure of the championship of the Caernarfon
& District League at Penygroes on Saturday. Needing
only a point to clinch the title they gave a real
championship performance against Penygroes, the only
team to have beaten them in the league this season.
Penygroes never looked capable of repeating that performance
as they were outplayed in every department. Llanrug
dominated the exchanges throughout and the man who
had the least to do on the field was their goalkeeper,
Gwilym Williams. Williams, who lives in Penygroes,
was playing his 100th game for Llanrug, and no doubts
if he ever had a match with so little to do. Llanrug
attacked from the start and only a goal line clearance
from a Selwyn Allsop strike prevented them taking
the lead after only five minutes. Centre forward Arfon
Lewis gave them the lead five minutes later when he
headed in a cross by left winger Gwyn Edwards, and
in the 22nd minute he added a second when he chased
and tapped in a through ball by inside right Aneurin
Roberts, as the home defenders stood still appealing
for off-side. Richard Jones, the Penygroes custodian
did well to save a fierce drive by right-winger Roger
Owen in the 17th minute, but was completely beaten
by a header by inside left Arwyn Roberts in the 27th
minute, which hit the woodwork. Penygroes only scoring
opportunity came in the 42nd minute, when centre forward
Rhodri Gwyn Jones whacked a drive past Gwilym Williams
only to see the ball hit the post. Selwyn Allsop put
United further ahead in the 56th minute with a fine
shot, and Roger Owen scored their fourth in the 70th
minute following a good run when he beat two defenders.
Four minutes later Arfon Lewis scored his third goal
with a shot to the corner of the net following good
work by Gwyn Edwards, and in the 80th minute substitute
Michael S.Jones hit a fine goal with a shot to the
roof of the net. With only two minutes remaining Roger
Owen scored the best goal of the match, when in full
flight he connected with a through ball by Gwyn Edwards
to hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.
LLANRUG ARE
CHAMPIONS - Llanrug United are the champions of
the Caernarfon & District League for this season.
They clinched the title with a runaway 7-0 victory
at Penygroes on Saturday. Victory was sweet revenge
for Llanrug as Penygroes & District were the only
team to have beaten them in the league campaign so
far this season, back in September with a 3-2 win
at Llanrug. Scorers for the champions, who have one
more match to play in the league, were Arfon Lewis
(3), Roger Owen (2), Selwyn Allsopp and Michael S.Jones.
So Llanrug have won the title, having collected 44
points from 25 matches. Their goal average is also
impressive having scored 89 goals and conceded only
25. Their last league match is this Saturday when
Criccieth Town are the visitors to Llanrug, and the
championship cup will be presented to them.
CELTS IN SECOND
PLACE - Who will be the runners-up ? This is a
question, which has yet to be decided. Talysarn Celts
disposed of Mountain Rangers in second position with
a 3-2 win away against Harlech Town. The Rangers have
the same number of points but Talysarn have a superior
goal average, and the also have a game in hand on
the Rangers. At Harlech the Celts were two goals up
at the interval but they had a fight on their hands
in the second half as the Castle men came prominently
into the picture. R.J.Williams (2) and R.T.Jones scored
for the Celts with brothers Gerallt and Gareth Roberts
netting a goal apiece for Harlech.
LLANBER CLEAR
CUT WIN - Llanberis, with a goal in each half,
beat Bangor University College 2-0. Owie Williams
and Gwilym Williams scored for Llanberis. The Students
owe a lot to their goalkeeper that Llanberis did not
run up a bigger score.
HARD FIGHT AT
NEFYN - Nefyn United had to fight hard for their
2-1 home win against Criccieth Town. The scorers for
Nefyn, who led 1-0 at the interval, were Gerallt Jones
and Tony Roberts, with Harri Griffiths the former
Talysarn Celt player netting Criccieth's solitary
goal.

CHAMPIONS
LOST ONLY ONE GAME
In winning
the championship of the Caernarfon and District League
this season, Llanrug United lost only one of their
26 matches and held the top spot in the table from
September.
When they rejoined
the League in 1968 after a lapse of ten years, their
capital was only £1.12 ½ (£1 2s
6d). But there was plenty of enthusiasm. Their main
problem in re-starting was finding a suitable field,
but this was soon resolved when Mr William Pritchard
, Cefn Llwyd Farm, a former Llanrug player, came to
club's aid by allowing them the use of Eithin Duon
field.
In 1970 the club
were offered a chance of buying the field and after
making extra efforts to raise the money, not only
for the purchase of the field, but for new dressing
rooms, reseeding, refencing and the erection of gates
and barriers, this year the club achieved both their
targets and still boast a healthy bank balance. And
that balance would be used for further improvements
to the field and to provide even better facilities
both for the players and supporters.
Mr Bob Thomas the
club chairman, stated that the club's policy is to
develop, encourage and provide facilities for boys
under 15, youths under 18 and seniors to actively
participate in amateur football. He paid tribute to
the work put in by the secretary Mr Arfon Davies and
treasurer Mr George Lovatt, but stressed that success
was largely due to an active, enthusiastic and hard
working committee, where every one had their part
to play.
He praised the
fine efforts of the ladies committee under the chairmanship
of Mrs Nancy Lloyd Jones, who had provided refreshments
at all the home games, organised whist drives, concerts
and raffles, and also thanked the people of the district
for their encouragement and active support.
The team manager
Mr Gwilym Lloyd Jones and captain Elfyn Richards both
feel that the work put in by the ladies and men's
committees has been reflected in the team, who have
responded magnificently, as a past performances have
proved. In addition to the players natural ability,
the right blend of experience and youth has resulted
in a highly successful team of which they are very
proud .
The president of
the club Mr Ernest Fildes, Rhythallt Hotel, summed
up the reason for their success by quoting the club's
motto " In unity there is strength ".
