TOWN NET SIX IN FINAL TRIAL

CAERNARFON TOWN 6 - 1 LLANRUG UNITED

Caernarfon Town played calmly and confidently in their final pre-season match to gain a comfortable victory over Llanrug United at the Oval on Saturday. They quickly settled down into a commanding role and were allowed to play the game at their own unhurried pace. And it was this composure that kept them from making defensive errors of any great significance. After 25 minutes their trialist fullback David Horran, opened their accounts with a fine shot just to the left of the Llanrug goalie. After that came a series of Caernarfon attacks, but a second goal eluded them for quite some time. In fact, it was the seventh minute of the second half that Maldwyn Lloyd, netted their second goal, and it seemed to be the spur for their goal seeking forwards. Less than a minute later John Hammond hit the cross bar.

Very active up front for Caernarfon was Owen Parry, who on a number of occasions made some useful and dangerous crosses from the wing, and was involved in setting up of two of the goals. Eighteen minutes into the second half an intended pass by Gerald Parry to one of his teammates was deflected from a Llanrug defender to Caernarfon inside forward Terry Smith, who netted easily. Five minutes later Gerald Parry himself scored from 25 yards out with a low and hard drive into the back of the net. In the 73rd minute came one of the best moves of the game Terry Smith on the right hand passed to Owen Parry who was running alongside him, Parry dummied a Llanrug defender, and returned the ball to Smith, who immediately sent it to Gerald Parry who was completely unmarked, and he netted effortlessly.

However, Caernarfon didn't have matters all their own way, Llanrug played some attractive football on occasions, and had their moments, even though they were few and far between. Eifion Hughes was a keen tackler and a calculating schemer. The degree of understanding between Llanrug midfield players was at times extremely entertaining and should prove to be a great facet for them in their Caernarfon and District League fixtures. Inside forward Meirion Hughes, was their busiest attacker and his goal on the hour was well-deserved consolation.

Caernarfon ended the scoring seven minutes from time when Terry Smith scored his second goal. Caernarfon, in this game showed the sharpness up front that they lacked for most part of last season, and it this performance is anything to go by, it looks as if their goal-scoring problem has been solved.

C'fon & Denbigh Herald - 20th, August, 1971

PWLLHELI KEEP UP CHALLENGE - In the only League game in the Caernarfon & District League on Saturday Pwllheli Reserves kept up their challenge for honours by defeating Caernarfon Reserves at Caernarfon. It was an interesting and evenly contested struggle with Pwllheli snatching the points with a goal in the dying minutes. Caernarfon, playing neat constructive football in the opening period, created many anxious moments for the Pwllheli defence and should have scored more than one goal by centre forward Martin Thomas. Pwllheli came on terms with a great goal by centre forward Geraint Hughes. Pwllheli supplied strong pressure in the second period and Caernarfon goalkeeper Maldwyn Williams, brought off many good saves. But Caernarfon were desperately unlucky in not going in front midway through this period. After Martin Thomas had forced goalkeeper John V.Lewis, who come from Caernarfon, to a great save, Thomas retained possession, but his shot hit the post and Pwllheli had an escape. With time running out everything looked like the game ending in a draw when Pwllheli forced a corner on the right and Howell Lewis netted with the flag kick.

The student's scorers were Meilir Owen (2), Ian Jones, D.A.Jones and John Davies.

LAST MINUTE EQUALISER - Llanrug United playing at home were forced to replay by Colwyn Bay, who scored their equaliser in a 2-2 draw in injury time. This was bad luck for Llanrug for they had shown fine form against a strong Bay side, which included several players who appear regularly for the club in Division One of the Welsh League. Llanrug were 2-1 up at the interval and it looked as if they were set for the next round until that late equaliser by the Bay. Gwyn Edwards scored both Llanrug goals.

SHARED SIX GOALS - Nefyn United and Llanberis shared six goals in another exciting tussle. Nefyn were 2-1 up at the interval, but Llanberis fought back to force a replay. A THIRD CLASH - Hirael United and Pwllheli Reserves failed to settle which of them will go forward into the third round of the Alves Cup for the second round replay at Bangor on Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw, the same score as when the clubs meet at Pwllheli. In the first meeting at Pwllheli the teams shared two goals and this was the score also at Hirael in the replay. So there had to be a second replay and this on the ground of Mountain Rangers F.C. at Bontnewydd resulted in a 4-3 win for Hirael, their winning goal coming in the fading minutes of the game. Altogether the teams played 270 minutes before the deadlock was broken. Both teams were again evenly matched and at the break they were sharing two goals. If the first half had been a rather tame affair there was plenty of excitement in the second period when five goals were scored. After Hirael had raced to a 3-1 lead Pwllheli struck back in grand style and scored two goals to bring the score level. It appeared that the game would go to extra time, but less than five minutes from time alter Williams clinched the issue for Hirael and Gary Black scored the other three. PENYGROES HAMMERED - Llanrug United powered their way to a runaway victory to make sure of the championship of the Caernarfon & District League at Penygroes on Saturday. Needing only a point to clinch the title they gave a real championship performance against Penygroes, the only team to have beaten them in the league this season. Penygroes never looked capable of repeating that performance as they were outplayed in every department. Llanrug dominated the exchanges throughout and the man who had the least to do on the field was their goalkeeper, Gwilym Williams. Williams, who lives in Penygroes, was playing his 100th game for Llanrug, and no doubts if he ever had a match with so little to do. Llanrug attacked from the start and only a goal line clearance from a Selwyn Allsop strike prevented them taking the lead after only five minutes. Centre forward Arfon Lewis gave them the lead five minutes later when he headed in a cross by left winger Gwyn Edwards, and in the 22nd minute he added a second when he chased and tapped in a through ball by inside right Aneurin Roberts, as the home defenders stood still appealing for off-side. Richard Jones, the Penygroes custodian did well to save a fierce drive by right-winger Roger Owen in the 17th minute, but was completely beaten by a header by inside left Arwyn Roberts in the 27th minute, which hit the woodwork. Penygroes only scoring opportunity came in the 42nd minute, when centre forward Rhodri Gwyn Jones whacked a drive past Gwilym Williams only to see the ball hit the post. Selwyn Allsop put United further ahead in the 56th minute with a fine shot, and Roger Owen scored their fourth in the 70th minute following a good run when he beat two defenders. Four minutes later Arfon Lewis scored his third goal with a shot to the corner of the net following good work by Gwyn Edwards, and in the 80th minute substitute Michael S.Jones hit a fine goal with a shot to the roof of the net. With only two minutes remaining Roger Owen scored the best goal of the match, when in full flight he connected with a through ball by Gwyn Edwards to hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

LLANRUG ARE CHAMPIONS - Llanrug United are the champions of the Caernarfon & District League for this season. They clinched the title with a runaway 7-0 victory at Penygroes on Saturday. Victory was sweet revenge for Llanrug as Penygroes & District were the only team to have beaten them in the league campaign so far this season, back in September with a 3-2 win at Llanrug. Scorers for the champions, who have one more match to play in the league, were Arfon Lewis (3), Roger Owen (2), Selwyn Allsopp and Michael S.Jones. So Llanrug have won the title, having collected 44 points from 25 matches. Their goal average is also impressive having scored 89 goals and conceded only 25. Their last league match is this Saturday when Criccieth Town are the visitors to Llanrug, and the championship cup will be presented to them.

CELTS IN SECOND PLACE - Who will be the runners-up ? This is a question, which has yet to be decided. Talysarn Celts disposed of Mountain Rangers in second position with a 3-2 win away against Harlech Town. The Rangers have the same number of points but Talysarn have a superior goal average, and the also have a game in hand on the Rangers. At Harlech the Celts were two goals up at the interval but they had a fight on their hands in the second half as the Castle men came prominently into the picture. R.J.Williams (2) and R.T.Jones scored for the Celts with brothers Gerallt and Gareth Roberts netting a goal apiece for Harlech.

LLANBER CLEAR CUT WIN - Llanberis, with a goal in each half, beat Bangor University College 2-0. Owie Williams and Gwilym Williams scored for Llanberis. The Students owe a lot to their goalkeeper that Llanberis did not run up a bigger score.

HARD FIGHT AT NEFYN - Nefyn United had to fight hard for their 2-1 home win against Criccieth Town. The scorers for Nefyn, who led 1-0 at the interval, were Gerallt Jones and Tony Roberts, with Harri Griffiths the former Talysarn Celt player netting Criccieth's solitary goal.

C'fon & Denbigh Herald - 21st April, 1972

LLANRUG FINISH ON WINNING NOTE - Llanrug United, the new champions of the Caernarfon & District League, completed their league programme on Saturday on a winning note, betting Criccieth Town 3-1. The champions deserved their success but the Castlemen gave them a hard fight. All the goals came in the first half Michael S.Jones and Roger Owen with a goal apiece put the champions ahead, but Criccieth were in with a chance when Spiros Parry pulled one back for them. However, Roger Owen scored Llanrug's clincher just before the interval. The championship cup was presented to Llanrug United captain Elfyn Richards, by Mr Wilfred Davies, of Caernarfon, the League's secretary, and Mr Bobby Haines, a member of the League's Management Committee, presented the trophies that goes with the championship cup to each member of the Llanrug team.

SET-BACK FOR NORMAL - Bangor Normal College suffered a setback in their bid for the runners-up position when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mountain Rangers at Bontnewydd. Centre forward Martin Thomas scored both goals for the Rangers, who completed their League programme, and Meilir Owen scored the College's two goals.

CLEAR CUT WINNERS - Llanberis ran out five clear goals winners away against Hirael United. Llanberis raced to a two goals interval lead and after the break banged three more into the Hirael net. The Llanberis scorers were Robert (2), Brian Edwards, Adrian Jones and Gwilym Williams.

PENYGROES HELD - Penygroes & District after leading 2-1 at the interval at home against Nefyn United were held to a 2-2 draw. Richie Jones and R.G.Jones scored for Penygroes with Roger Morgan and Peter Griffiths replying.

C'fon & Denbigh Herald - May 1972.

CHAMPIONS LOST ONLY ONE GAME

In winning the championship of the Caernarfon and District League this season, Llanrug United lost only one of their 26 matches and held the top spot in the table from September.

When they rejoined the League in 1968 after a lapse of ten years, their capital was only £1.12 ½ (£1 2s 6d). But there was plenty of enthusiasm. Their main problem in re-starting was finding a suitable field, but this was soon resolved when Mr William Pritchard , Cefn Llwyd Farm, a former Llanrug player, came to club's aid by allowing them the use of Eithin Duon field.

In 1970 the club were offered a chance of buying the field and after making extra efforts to raise the money, not only for the purchase of the field, but for new dressing rooms, reseeding, refencing and the erection of gates and barriers, this year the club achieved both their targets and still boast a healthy bank balance. And that balance would be used for further improvements to the field and to provide even better facilities both for the players and supporters.

Mr Bob Thomas the club chairman, stated that the club's policy is to develop, encourage and provide facilities for boys under 15, youths under 18 and seniors to actively participate in amateur football. He paid tribute to the work put in by the secretary Mr Arfon Davies and treasurer Mr George Lovatt, but stressed that success was largely due to an active, enthusiastic and hard working committee, where every one had their part to play.

He praised the fine efforts of the ladies committee under the chairmanship of Mrs Nancy Lloyd Jones, who had provided refreshments at all the home games, organised whist drives, concerts and raffles, and also thanked the people of the district for their encouragement and active support.

The team manager Mr Gwilym Lloyd Jones and captain Elfyn Richards both feel that the work put in by the ladies and men's committees has been reflected in the team, who have responded magnificently, as a past performances have proved. In addition to the players natural ability, the right blend of experience and youth has resulted in a highly successful team of which they are very proud .

The president of the club Mr Ernest Fildes, Rhythallt Hotel, summed up the reason for their success by quoting the club's motto " In unity there is strength ".
