Chwarewyd
gem olaf y tymor yng Nghyngrair Caernarfon a'r Cylch ar
Ffordd Padarn, ac roedd y ddau dim a siawns o gipio'r
bencampwriaeth . Roedd gem gyfartal yn ddigon i Lanrug,
ond roedd traddodiad yn ei herbyn, gan na ennillodd y
cochion yn Llanberis ers deng mlynedd. Roedd tyrfa dda
o bron i 600 wedi troi allan i wylio a chefnogi'r ddau
dim, roedd hyd yn oed teledu Harlech yn teimlo ei bod
yn gem digon pwysig i'w ffilmio.
Llanrug aeth
ar y blaen ar ôl dau ddeg pump munud - Hefin Jones
yn cael ei dynnu lawr ar yr asgell dde, ac o'r gic gosb,
Barrie Pitts yn rhoi'r bel yng nghefn y rhwyd, ond ymhen
tri munud cyn yr egwyl sgoriodd Ray Harding gôl
wych i ddod a Llanberis yn gyfartal.
Yn yr ail hanner,
a Llanberis yn sylweddoli fod yn rhaid iddynt ennill y
gem os am fod yn bencampwyr, dechreuasant ymosod o ddifri,
ac gwelwyd Nigel Hardwidge ar ei orau yn y gôl i
Lanrug, Ond wrth iddynt wthio ymlaen, yn naturiol roeddent
yn gadael lle gwag yn y cefn. Ac o ganlyniad, llithrodd
Dic Owen trwodd, gan groesi'r bel i Len Padmore, ac yntau'n
taro'r bel yn daclus rhwng coesau'r gôlgeidwad.
Ac o fewn pump munudau, aeth Llanrug ymhellach ar y blaen,
Dic Owen y sgôrio trydedd gôl i'r ymwelwyr,
ac roedd hyn yn ddigon i dorri calon hogia Llanber. Ac
cyn y diwedd, sgoriodd Dic Owen ei ail gôl, gan
sicrhau pencampwriaeth i Llanrug am y tro cyntaf ers tymor
1971-1972.
Ar ddiwedd y
gem cyflwynodd Cadeirydd y Gynghrair Mr R.M.Williams o
Borthmadog Tlws y Peencampwriaeth i gapten Llanrug United
Ken Jones.
The last game
of the Caernarfon & District League was staged at
Padarn Road, and both teams had a chance to win the championship.
A draw game was sufficient for Llanrug, but tradition
was against them, they had not won at Llanberis for ten
years. What a finale, who could have wished for a better
finish to the season.
There were other
reasons to make this their match of the season, HTV were
present to recoed the match. Llanberis had gone to a lot
of trouble in their arrangemnets, but a large crowd and
an exciting game made it all worth while. It was as much
a thrill for the players as it was for the supporters
to hear the teams being announced over the tannoy system.
Players on both
side were nervous, and this eas clearly visable when the
match kick-off. Goal oppurtunities in the opening period
were very few. On twenty five minutes Llanrug were awardeda
free-kick on the left touchline, and when Hefin Jones
crossed the ball Barrie Pitts scored for Llanrug. Despite
the setback Llanberis did not lose heart and their efforts
were rewarded when Ray Harding equalised with a tremendous
volley three minutes from the interval.
After the break,
Llanberis realising that nothing short of victory would
gain the Championship, stepped up the pace and brought
out the best in Nigel Hardwidge. But just at the point
when Llanberis were threatining to take control Llanrug
broke on the right, and from Dick Owen's cross Len Padmore
was unmarked to fire his side into the lead. This goal
came in the seventieth minute, and it was the signal for
Llanrug to take over the role of dictators. Within five
minutes they were 3 - 1 ahead, when yet another cross
from the right was hammerer home by Dick Owen. Llanrug
were now rampent and it was no suprise when Dick Owen
scored his second goal of the match five minutes from
the final whistle.
At the end of
the match the Chairman of the League Mr R.M.Williams of
Porthmadog , presented the championship trophy to the
Llanrug United captain Ken Jones.
