THE
PRESIDENT'S MEN
SPOT-
ON : MACHNO SHINES IN VITAL PENALTY DECIDER
Two brilliant
penalty saves by teenage goalkeeper Owain Machno Lloyd
completed Llanrug United's triumph in the final of the
Gwynedd President's Cup. But the showpiece clash with
Pwllheli had become a protracted affair ar Porthmadog's
Traeth ground on Tuesday, stretching through 90 minutes,
then extra-time and on to the spot-kick contest.
When the drama
reached its cresendo, Pwllheli had a conversion by Paul
Williams, a miss by Steve Williams, a conversion by Alan
Jones, and then misses by Paul Monaghan and Geraint Jones.
Llanrug fared that vital bit better, netting thanks to
Stuart Williams, Robert Morris, and Ceirion Williams,
and a miss by Rodney Roberts. The Trophy was then presented
to Llanrug's captain Gary Evans by Gwynedd League president
Gwyn Pierce Owen.
Llanrug had belived
matters were going their way comfortably during the match
itself, when they developed a two-clear-goal lead inside
the first quarter. Dilwyn John Williams scored from six
yards after five minutes and teammate Meical Owen followed
suit with a header after 20 minutes.
Pwllheli demonstrated
their resilience within 60 seconds, through Geraint Jones,
who rose well to turn in a cross from the wing and, at
2-1, the game was wide open again. The teams were balanced
again on 75 minutes, thanks to Pwllheli's Alan Jones,
who slammed a crisp 18 yarder into the net, and in effect
extended the proceedings into extra-time and beyond.
